Starting to take my blood high blood pressure seriously and really looking into my diet to try and improve things and to be honest starting to get frustrated big time. As an example I assumed tinned tomatoes would be fine but they're not good at all.
I love my two bits of toast in the morning but I'm reading that this alone puts me way over the limit. And that's before I have a beer.Laugh
Would be grateful for any pointers from anyone with better knowledge of it all.

Best to take drastic action IMO and stop the prawns.

First thing you want to do is get a decent home BP testing kit and do it yourself when you are feeling relaxed. You will not believe the dodgy readings at the quacks because people are stressed.I had mine done by the quack and the best reading was 179/120. Went back a week later and used the self service tester and averaged 130/80 and still wasnt totally relaxed.Plenty of people are on tablets for LIFE because of iffy results.

Eat a little less, exercise a little more, stop smoking and avoid saturated fats and sugar.
Alcohol in moderation is good for you and your blood pressure.

I have been monitoring my figures this past week and they are all about the 116/58/52 area.
The lowest was 108/62/45 and was an anomaly. I had a drink every day. I use coarse sea salt , eat ham and bacon regularly.
Cholesterol is 3.1 , thanks to statins , but when I make an effort I get it down to 2.8.

My guess is that you have plenty of sugar in your diet.

I've got the home monitor kit and measure it every day. I'm under a specialist as it went to 158/80 since then through walking and better diet it has come down to the 120's - to 130.

Last few days it shot back back to 140 slowly coming down again. I don't have sugar as I'm type 2.
Report anxious October 7, 2016 2:32 PM BST
bigmo think its the second number that's more important the 80 is ok ideally they like it be about 120-80
Report anxious October 7, 2016 2:33 PM BST
They used to say 140- 90 was ok then they changed it to 120-80 about 20 years ago
Report bigmo October 7, 2016 2:40 PM BST
Thanks anxiuos I hadn't realised. Posted because I was a bit surprised at how much salt is in everything when you start checking food properly. Made the mistake of assuming certain foods are ok when in fact they're not.

It's a case of researching it all now and reading every label but would imagine all processed food is out.
Report anxious October 7, 2016 2:59 PM BST
Most of your tinned gear has sugar and salt in it I think tinned soups are one of the highest for salt, best thing to do with them is have them but cut them down , tbh a lot of it is moderation in most things, problem can be that somebodys idea of moderation might not be correct

On the issue of canned tomatoes particulally;

I've just looked at two types I have in the cupboard, cesso and Napolina.
On salt cesso is pretty bad tbh, 0.7g ish per 1/4 can (I hate it when they do that) so 1 can is around 1/3 of the recommended daily salt limit.
Whereas Napolina was something like 0.2g for half a can so much better, but from recollection it's pricier.

Considering canned tomatoes have such a wide variety of uses in home cooking and that it's practically impossible to make stuff without adding something that has salt etc in I think the more expensive tinned tomatoes to be pretty good.
I use two cans in a massive cook up of all sorts and it lasts most of the week so all in all its a solid performer IMO.

You could go that extra mile and make your own purée ofc, it's not that hard, just buy loads of big tomatoes boil them down, de skin in cold water and then sieve.
Report bigmo October 8, 2016 9:18 AM BST
Thanks dustybin. TBH I get confused when looking at 0.7g etc trying to work it all out. It was an internet article that stated they were lethal but going by what your saying they're not as bad as I thought.
Report dustybin October 8, 2016 9:31 AM BST
Well I don't know what they were suggesting but the general advice is not to consume more than 6g of salt a day.
If you factor in cooking with tinned tomatoes making something that serves as a major food intake then I see them as not being particulally bad but then that's just me looking at the data given, if there's something else that they arnt telling us then that might be it but I suspect they are talking about cheap tinned tomatoes on toast.
I don't think cesso is exactly cheap either but has a much greater salt content than Napolina, the supermarket brands probs have even higher amounts, and if you consider tomatoes on toast just to be one meal of one tin of tomatoes that would mean it a very significant portion of the daily salt intake.

What I'm suggesting is use quality tinned tomatoes in cooking up batch loads of curry, or bolognase etc from scratch, that's the best way all round and the tinned tomatoes are spread over numerous meals.

Most home bp and heart rate monitors are inaccurate.  Why take pills when you can cure it with diet and a bit of walking?  The disease of western society is laziness in respect to not taking responsibility for your own health.
Report anxious October 8, 2016 12:41 PM BST
Yes theres a lot of truth in that
Report dustybin October 8, 2016 12:53 PM BST
Theres also a lot of truth in the fact that people have been set up to fail.
I realise its not a political issue and that all successive governments have played a hand in it but the continued deregulation of enterprise has lead to a hands off approach to opportunistic business.
This may be fine to 'create opportunity' or 'give customers choice' but its a ham fisted way of letting companies churn out products knowingly to be bad for health.
In addition its only recently that initiatives have come into place (and more to follow) that brings education into the mix.
Quite how companies have been allowed to sugar up or saltify food to the extent they have and use the common argument that they are simply meeting a desire when really they are trying to beat competition.
Too many lobbyists dipping their saltified bread into manufactured sugar soup at the expense of the nations health.

That doesnt mean people have no responsibility, but they should have an easier way of defining what is and isnt good.
Pizzas in supermarkets that contain over 30 cubes of sugar cant be the choice that is good for us.
Report anxious October 8, 2016 1:14 PM BST
Yes dustybin but the big fast food chains and supermarkets are only interested in making money out of people , end of.
Report dustybin October 8, 2016 1:38 PM BST
They are, just as supermarkets and processed food manufacturers are and all until recently have been allowed to hide away truths with the foods standards allowing a conflicting and confusing information declaration standard.
here is some tougher talk on standardising such information, theres been the interest in sugar tax and there is to come legislation on take aways having to give the same information as boxed foods.
Report dustybin October 8, 2016 1:40 PM BST
Its all very convenient for maggot politicians to say in parliament that those products are fine in moderation, the truth is all food companies say the same thing, so which foods are the ones that make up the health part in that 'part of a balanced diet' when all of them are looking for profit over health?

@dustybin I think you're missing the point, it has nothing to do with politicians, supermarkets or manufacturers, you know as well as me and everyone else what food is good for you and which is bad, it's really no different to smoking or boozing, more people probably die prematurely from a poor diet than boozing and ciggys combined.  A diet full of nutrition doesn't have to be dull, if you buy food in boxes and tins you know there's a good chance it's garbage.

Thats quite right and a point I was going to make about smoking and regulation.
If they can force tobacco companies to hide packets behind counters and force them to have graphic warnings on the covers then why have they fannied around appeasing food production lobbyists and never got their head out of their arses to tell the customer in clear terms exactly how much salt etc the item they are buying contributes towards their advisory limits?
The way each company tries its best to make it as opaque as possible is close to criminal.
Report dustybin October 10, 2016 3:37 PM BST
Each product that has high sugar or salt content, some of which exceed the daily recommendation with their product alone should be forced to have at least a quarter of the packet giving the same warnings that tobacco has.
Its all very well saying that you and I know and suggest choice is our societies salvation, when the truth of the matter is the very confusion is the opportunity business uses to make profit....profit from bad ill informed and addictive decisions on foodstuffs that have been created with repetitive sales in mind.
Report dustybin October 10, 2016 3:42 PM BST
Besides its the tail wagging the dog.
Enterprise will say that they couldmake their product without the sugar or salt, but then people wouldnt want it....but it was them who added the sugar and salt to the diet in the first place.

WARNING!

I was put on Felodipine for high blood pressure and ended up with periodontitis, which was quite a shock as I do look after my teeth. After noticing the signs I visited the dentist who originally told me that smoking had caused it but they got so bad he recommended a periodontist. It was here that I was questioned on the use of Felodipine where he asked if the issues began when the pills began; I couldn't say for certain but it was definitely close.

When I mentioned this to my doctor he took me off them straight away. Unfortunately for me the damage has already been done but I'd recommend that anyone on this drug keeps an eye on their gums to try to catch it early.

Another side effect is swollen ankles, although that tends to be seasonal and only came up in hot weather; I was pre-warned of this latter effect.
