When I was from 8 or 9 upwards all the kids had sheath knives. It was standard kit!
Usually maybe 8" and with leather handles and sheath.

Essential kit for whittling trees for a new catapult, or throwing arrows etc (which we never left home without).

Bows and arrows, air guns, and everything else, meant we were well tooled up.
Even the pastors son had a flick knife with which we would play in Sunday school.

Teddy boys carried cut throat razors, as a fashion accessory, in the top pocket of their "Draped Jackets".

The thing is I don't recall anyone getting hurt, and  any of these armaments used in anger!

Yes, that sounds about right for the 60s when I was growing up. Was also in the Scouts, so pretty much licensed to carry a sheath knife. Also can't recall anyone using them in anger.

Always.
All types, lock knives butterfly knives pen knives etc.
When really young it was mostly innocent but when I was around 16 I got stopped at school carrying a seven inch Bowie with bones handle and the world almost caved in.
I'd have got youth offenders without question nowadays but the laws were different then.
Was lucky but the adults were more shocked than anyone else, the kids just accepted it.

A large % of people were normal back in them days, if they had/carried
a knife, it was most likely for show rather than to use.

All the others had one!

We also used an axe, but that would be on camping trips and not around the streets.

My Aunty used to carry a knife in her handbag in case she fancied a piece of fruit and a knife wasn't supplied to cut it up.

I'm surprised that Ron hasn't mentioned that all Sikhs carry a kirpan at all times, and that they should be locked up Laugh

Sikhs are nice people - they integrate & still follow their religion.

They don't cause trouble.

Don't be so stupid, please. I know nothing about Sikhs, and don't intend to swat up enough on them to find a reason to hate.

Aunty Sheila, she wore calipers but managed to get around- never see anyone wearing them now.

I don't know any Sikhs or Muslims, there will be good and bad in them though just like anyone else.

Knives have no place on the streets nowadays, they are from times past where life was more straight forward and people had fewer things.
I had them for function, they were handy in the woods but kids probably don't even go into the woods now.
When older I appreciated the craftsmanship and aesthetics of the product but smithies are gone now and production all but stopped, unless it's some freakish saw bladed plastic handled sword like thing drug deals buy.
When I had one I can't ever recall thinking of using it on somebody, but the chance is there I guess so the laws are correct to be hard on them.
Loads of stuff has disappeared, I remember little tins of snuff in privets and hedge rows when I was a kid, you tell a kid about snuff today and they'll probably show you a clip on a phone.

Even as recently as the early 80's, Rambo knives (FFS!) were on sale and carried around by kids.

Doubt they were ever used for either innocent or not-so-innocent reasons. Just for pose value really

that's a bit of a myth. I have 3 good friends who are Sikhs and they all wear the gold bracelet instead, only time I saw one with his kirpan was at his brothers wedding and it was in the temple.

I had a flick-knife as a child and the usual Scout knives, Swiss Army and British Cavalry Issue. In those days you could buy throwing knives and they were good fun.
About twenty five years ago I was arrested and a tiny knife was found in my car. It was given to me by a dear old chap who thought it might come in handy when I was fishing. It was of no use at all but I did not have the heart to discard it. Carrying an offensive weapon would have been laughed out of court (they thought about it) but  since then I have been very careful.

I had to carry an ex-girlfriend for half a mile after she broke her ankle. She was a massive Sheffield United fan.

I've seen those there Sheffield United supporting women.
You wouldn't need a knife, she would keep attackers at bay.

Aged 12-13 I lusted after the knives, in a shop window, when on a holiday.

I bought three 4" lock-knives for friends at school and a six inch stiletto lock knife for myself.

Some b@st@rd stole mine when at school!

About 10 years ago, my son's girlfriend who was a pharmaceutical rep, gave me a golf umbrella and a 4" locknive
endorsed with the companies name and logo.

Knives are for pu$$ies.

Here on the mean streets of Solihull an AK47 is a minimum ... but grenade launcher weapon of choice.

That's why there's never any stabbings, IMO.

Maybe. Still, at least Chit Chat's very own IAN Mohammed is spared that indignity, living (as he told us) in 'a lovely village' far far away from the vibrant, culturally-enriching ghettoes full of the people he pretends to support and accommodate at his own expense.

OK, I'm slightly exaggerating, Solihull's not yet a war zone.

But if I extrapolate the last 25 years and changing demographics, and look 25 years ahead, then it won't be twee.
