Can an £8.99 wine REALLY compete with a bottle that costs £199? Lidl claims its new range made from vineyards next door to famous French regions is just as good
Discount supermarket says famous estates are ripping off customers
It claims its wines compete with bottles on sale for £104 and nearly £200
Its wines hail from near to famous Bordeaux region of Saint-Emilion

Lidl is claiming its wines are *nearly* as good as the expensive ones, but this is true of most luxury goods: it is £10 better but you are charged £50.

I would say Lidl are probably correct.

Paying only for names and fancy bottles with the £150-£200 ones.If it was that good they would charge more

What Lidl might have added -- if they did not mind losing all their customers like the earrings bloke -- is that probably most people can't tell the difference anyway, and certainly not after a couple of glasses.

I wouldn't know a good wine from a bad one to be honest. I either like what I'm drinking or not.
Just back from a holiday in Menorca, and at the restaurant we frequented a couple of times, the waiter
advised which wines to go for with our meals. He suggested one particular wine one evening, telling us about
it's high(ish) quality, and quite nice it was too... at 22 euros a bottle.
The next day we popped into the little supermarket in the village and found the exact same wine on sale there
for 3.95 euros.
Ok, I know 'corkage', service and all that come into play, but a tad overpriced in the restaurant?
As far as Lidl wines go, I buy regularly from there, some are very nice indeed. The chardonnay (colombard) is
very drinkable, as is their Comte de Senneval champagne, at just under a tenner a bottle. To me it's comparable to Moet,
but better :)

Difficult question. The only reason I've ever bought a bottle of wine is to impress a lady and get her, um, relaxed. I'm sure the Lidl brand would do a good job on the latter half of the deal, but would that blue-and-yellow label really impress her enough to get to that stage?

Unless I am in a restaurant I will not pay more than £5 per bottle.

I can recommend the wines from the Wine Society. There is a full price range and some surprisingly palatable wines for very little money.

Senior Management and I have a glass with dinner every night and some are not to our taste but the majority are pretty good. Both there web site and the literature they send out are very informative and I have to say we are delighted.

We tried two other well known suppliers, one who want to get you in a subscription game, and they both started off well enough but soon degenerated into shipping some very rubbishy stuff.

When buying wines be careful as what seems a bargain is not always so. Some big stores may want to sell a wine that customers will not know much about. They may really want to sell it for £4.99 but start it at say £9.99. After a while they can then slash the price to the £4.99 they want.

They can legally claim a half-price reduction and it can then look to be a real bargain to customers and sell well. So the customer is not buying the bargain they think.

Do you take the same approach with your cigars, Chaser? Silly

By the way, if you like President soft cheese you can get a free bottle of plonk with 2 packs of brie (reduced to a quid each)at Tesco/Asda.

Over 2 quid will be duty. VAT also in the price. Add in packaging and distribution costs and you've got about 50p worth of wine.

I think it is probably all over. Fury doesn't seem to be able to stay properly physically fit, or in the right frame of mind for any length of time. If all the stories about drug tests etc are true, he'll probably struggle to get back, esp if he is stripped of titles and gets a ban.

I wonder if anybody knows a lot about wine importing into this country. From what I am led to believe some wine sold here has been imported into this country in a large bag inside a container - just like a wine box but on a much larger scale. Once here it is then bottled and this is now happening more and more.

I am interested to know how much of this goes on and for which major wine brands. Also how is the wine labelled. Does it all have the same brand label or in some instances is it bottled under more than one brand label.

Any answers?

Lots of wine is imported this way. The alternative (bottling at source) would be some hellish expensive wines on the supermarket shelves

Another strange thing. Buy a bottle of wine one week it tastes great, buy the same bottle the following week and it tastes different.

This has happened with quite a few bottles. If you buy lemon fanta one week, it will taste the exact same if you buy it the following week.
Wine differs slightly

Same with even coffee and teas etc then they bag in a nice brown bag labeled to look like it's top of the range
