What would the vote have been if there was freedom of movement back then

Not to mention the  EMU and the forced political integration from the Maastricht Treaty to the Lisbon Treaty.

We were told it was good for our exports, and I also suspect we wanted cheaper importsBlush

We never read the small print.

There was not much movement of labour then, that only started when we allowed the ex communist East European countries to join from 2001 on.

If people could have seen into the future, they would have voted for Brexit, in my opinion.

I think Thatcher may have taken us out, she threatened to, unless the common agricultural policy was reformed.

The EU obliged her to an extent, they did not think she was bluffing.

Thatcher got us a reduction in what we paid to be part of the EU.

Was a massive reduction Ebul but the agreement was due to run out shortly and we would have needed to renegotiate it.

EbulGery,

The explosion in immigration post-2001 was not really a consequence of the accession of the East European nations. It was a direct result of an unannounced and anti-democratic change in Immigration Policy by Blair and Straw.

When we voted in 1975, on whether to remain in the EU or leave. I believe there were only six nations in the union. And all comparatively wealthy.

Free movement then was seen as a positive advantage to all concerned.

It's only since we allowed so many poor countries into the EU that free movement has become toxic. Along with the economic migrant problem which compounds the problem, and turns it into a complete disaster.

As far as I'm concerned, we can't get out of the mess that the EU has become quickly enough.

yes I think we would have joined how it stood then as there were only a handful of nations in it, had people known though what was secretly being planned would be a different matter.

Whether that was the case or not, EU rules meant we could not stop immigration.

Since the Tories came back into power in 2011 it has continued at the same rate.....why we have voted for Brexit
