Incredible.

There should be a movie about them when they hang up their trunks, peddles and running shoes.

So you can have assistance in the race then can you?
Ill choose to be assisted with a motorbike and win hands down doing wheelies everytime.
Tar.

If I finished fourth Id deffo be asking the adjudicators whether the lad finished the last part of the race under his own steam.
He finished the race in part by the efforts of somebody else.
Should be and probably will be thrown out.
Report rogerthebutler • September 19, 2016 2:52 PM BST
Interesting point.

I think the deal here is you can't receive any external assistance e.g in the famous example when Derek Redmond did his hamstring in the 400 metres at the Olympics and his dad helped him round to finish the race, Redmond was actually disqualified.

Brownlee (competitor) helping Brownlee(fellow competitor) probably isn't covered by any rules as it's obviously such a rare occurrence

Is it a team event or an individual one?
I genuinely dont follow it.
If its an individual one then team mates shouldn't be able to assist others, what if some countries only have one participant?

Stupid thing to do -- should have just won the race and worried about his brother (who might have been injured) later.

But his Sports Personality of the Year odds have tumbled from 100/1 to 10/1 (6/1 on Sportsbook) so that's nice.

If Ali had got Johnny over the line 1st so he'd won the world series, I think Mola would have had grounds for complaint but on the basis that the final result wasn;t affected, I don;t suppose anyone will care. I agree you have a fair point though, if that had been olympic silver and bronze medals you can bet the guy finishing 4th would have lodged an appeal.

I watched it live and have never seen anything quite like that before - would have been one of the wackiest 1.01 defeats ever if there had been a market on here.  It looked pretty scary, like Tommy Simpson on Ventoux, but they didn't seem worried at all, as if it happens all the time

Well I thought it a quite brilliant example of 'brotherly love' in these 'Thatcher's Britain dog-eat-dog' years.
Yes, there really is such a thing as society and people actually caring about people.

What's more, it was a great example of true grit 'nah then lad' northernness, as you could see Alistair verbally abusing his brother as he reached him before grabbing his arm, putting it around his neck and then dragging him to the finish, tossing him over it, and then moving on to talk to fellow competitors.

None of this false Hollywood schmaltz type of 'caring' that is the scourge of society these days, when no one actually gives a toss but talks like they do so they'll get more 'likes' on some web page.
Pathetic.

That was a bit of REAL love. Do it. Get on with it. Carry on with life.
Report hulk23 • September 19, 2016 7:36 PM BST
disagree, his body was telling him he'd had enough.  if the brother wanted to be honorable he could have waited with him and made sure he was ok.  that must be more important than winning some poxy race, be plenty more of them.  would you be lauding him if his brother had a heart attack after he threw him over the line ?

probably not.
Report Tommy Toes • September 19, 2016 7:44 PM BST
Don't talk bloody daft.

Do you really think that these blokes who are fully experienced in the effects triathlons cause to the body would take such a risk?

Alistair knew exactly how his brother was feeling.
He's been there.
And as he said in his interview afterwards, when it happened to him, he always swore he'd help anyone over the line if he saw it happen to someone else - brother or not.

Too much bleedin' 'health and safety' nonsense now drummed into everyone's psyche is killing real life.

they do what they do every week, when your body packs up you have to respect that.  it's just my opinion but that looked irresponsible.  didn't even look after him at the line, just shoved him over and walked off to speak to some other bloke.

Agree TT

I have nothing but admiration for both of these lads.

Alistair knew exactly what was going on with his brother, he had been there before and realised the medical experts were at the finishing line and it would have been more dangerous to let him collapse before the home bend.
Report Tommy Toes • September 19, 2016 9:03 PM BST
I love 'em, ZenMaster.

Whenever I've seen them talk they are just totally grounded blokes who love competing, want to achieve all they can in their sporting lives, push each other towards their goals - and yet have the normal, human, sibling rivalry we (mostly) all understand.

There's no showmanship or false premiss behind them to make an extra buck.

They're just two traiathletes trying to be the best in their field.

They love each other - they're brothers - but they'd hate to admit it (they're Yorkshiremen) and see no reason why they should do.

So refreshing to see people just do the normal things in life (as they should be) without milking it.
Report Mikael D'Haguenet • September 19, 2016 9:09 PM BST
I agree with most of what you say TT, but if he couldn't get to the line under his own steam, he should be DQd imo. Presumably there is no provision in the rules for this, as RTB discusses earlier.

Perhaps if there was an objection from other athletes then the board would need to look into it Mikael.

However i guess the respect for these two is so high that no other athlete would do so.

I don't want to be totally cynical, and dont follow the sport enough to know if it's unprecedented, but it was his brother whose aid he came to. If it had been the Spaniard, who was vying with his brother for the title, that he'd helped then I would have been truly impressed.

Just to add, the performance that Alistair put in at the Olympics was the highlight of the entire Olympics for me.
Never have i seen anyone running through such pain with courage. To me he had the face of a corpse for the last 3K but kept digging in.

Alistair was probably taking it easy in this World series race, just to let Jonathon win the title.
That alone shows how he wants to share the legacy with his brother.

Johnny was in similar trouble in the Gold Coast triathlon earlier in the season ......but in freezing cold Edmonton race a couple of weeks ago the Yorkshire lad was in his element.

Think big brother will be attempting the step up to 70.3 and Ironman distances soon , trying to match 2008 Olympic champion Jan Frodeno who won both the Ironman and 70.3 world titles in 2015.
Report rob_dylan • September 19, 2016 9:34 PM BST
Think the rule is that you can help another competitor so long as that help doesnt stop you finishing... Eg your brother busts his front wheel you cant take off your front wheel and let him finish because in doing so it has stopped you finishing. You can however give a fellow competitor a spare inner or co2 canister. Domestiques are used in olympics all the time, basically nothing to see here, Spanish just trying it on as usual. I think I heard that Ali Brownlee is moving up to ironman distance soon, hoping to emulate Jan Frodeno who won olympic gold and ironman world champs. I personally would absolutely love to see it. AB is fast becoming my favourite sportsman.

Frodeno broke the world record this year...2.4 mile swim in 45 minutes, 112 mile bike in 4:10(27mph, way faster than most TDF long flat stages), 26.2 mile marathon in 2:40(6 minute miles)

dont think this one had owt to do with thatcher; siblings kicked seven bells out of each other around here before her and I'm from the north.
It's cheating in my book since the race is about personal endurance and time, not tag team or part assisted carrying over the line. If there are individual positions (ie 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc) then that indicates a singular position based on merit.
The guy wouldn't have finished so it wasn't his ability that finished that race and being that they are related that's an unfair advantage as he would likely help the sibling before others.
