ps hands free is nearly as distracting as holding a mobile as you can easily be pulled into a long discussion or argument etc etc etc - this completely takes you away from concentrating on driving.

Was part of a team of six who fell out with our boss over this.
We always pulled over to answer but was a bit of delay when on the motorway.
Anyways he got us hands free but after a first use and a bit of a chat amongst us we told him we were ing to use it.
You still have to take your eyes off the road to press answer and the convo was totally distracting.

Well Reynard, you're obviously in control of the situation if not drunk.

So the sentence I'd give you would be 100 lashes; and if you survived that, a ban from driving for life.

Oh, and I'd definitely ban you from posting on here.

I'd ban women in short skirts and killer heels from walking down the street . I've got a serious shoe fetish and I've had countless near misses thanks to Christian Louboutin !

what I found with hands free was you could get stuck into a long conversation about anything from - policy, arrangements and  to where you were going - do you see where I am with this? - as opposed to a quick - hi!!  etc  - totally distracting

Has it ever been okay? Sounds unlikely.

Its still ok to wear the next best thing to the blind fold believe
it or not - the full face veil they call it.

it the new trendy thing they're trying to force upon the youngsters of the UK
without giving the true barbaric reasoning's

Penalties is not the issue here. For all the talk of deterrence, the ultimate punishment is that the driver crashes or runs someone over while distracted. If that doesn't deter them, nor will an extra 3 points.

The problem is not the stiffness of the penalty but the low chance of being caught.

But what gets me are the muppets who answer the phone and pull over to continue the conversation while stationary, as the law demands. Clearly their heart is in the right place but why not stop before answering?

The government has got this wrong. Rather than stiffen the law, it should do what was done with seatbelts: advertising and education campaigns so that it is no longer socially acceptable not to use one. Drink-driving was much the same iirc.

Is it possible technology can help? The phone companies probably can tell you are in a moving car, so could just block all calls, but they wouldn't know if you are a passenger or hands-free. Maybe the chit chat boffins can think of something.

An automatic ban will deter. Will also offset to a certain extent the insouciance caused by the low detection chance.

I see loads of drivers going past holding a mobile phone to their ears as I walk on the pavement.
In slowly moving traffic they look sitting ducks for the police.

The annoying thing about his is how simple it is to change peoples behaviour.

DON'T increase the fine or penalty now.

Simply get someone in an office to go through film from speed cameras and catch say 20,000 across the country.  Same procedure as speed cameras. Cheap admin.  Fine them and give them 3 points.  Advertise
the fact it is not acceptable and the camera campaign and print the names of those caught in the local paper.  Keep stats on how many are using phones per 1000.

(If for any reason speed camera film cannot be used, just get coppers to stand by side of road in built up areas with camera - fines will cover operational costs and advertising campaign)

Phone use will reduce.

Wait 6 months and repeat exercise.  Check stats vs original campaign.

Hopefully, phone usage will decrease, in the same way as smoking with children in car, drink driving and seatbelt.

THEN increase fines to 6 points.
