I've been playing for about 30 years ...strongly recommend it .It's a fascinating game of many layers. The mental gymnastics it involves are
supposed to be a good defence against the onset of degenerative conditions like Alzheimer's etc. |

I was never any good at Meccano

Thanks guys.I was thinking along those lines Vubiant.I'm going to go along to a free class in a couple of weeks with a view to doing a 10 week beginners course.

Do you play lots of other card games GoOnThen?
|
|
By:
My grandparents loved the game and played 2-3 times a week. My grandad passed away 15 years ago but my grandma is still mad about the game - whenever we go up to Scotland to visit her she gets the cards out.
It is a great game - I'm only a novice but really enjoy it. I've heard it is taken incredibly seriously at bridge clubs. You use cards to bid - speaking during the game is uncommon. |

I go to the local bridge club every now and again. Duplicate bridge, random draw for partners. End up playing with the odd complete dunce but better than having people inventing secret sign langauage and Whittockesque coughing bouts playing with the same partners. Fairly friendly night, nowhere near as vicious as the local dominoes league.

That's my kind of hand! |

I get more fun out of playing black maria or nomination whist with my mates, and a much higher standard of play.

Too difficult for me . Backgammon is my game.

For me Solitaire's the only game in town

Almost makes you feel whistful.

Don't play any card games Jed. A bit of whist with the family when growing up and the occasional hand of 3 card brag in my misspent youth is pretty much the extent of my experience. Got a flyer through the door at the weekend offering the 10 week Bridge course locally that caught my eye. Am I likely to encounter any female talent during the course of my endeavours?

Update . I've been playing a few months now and slowly picking it up. Off on a Bridge weekend in Wiltshire in a couple of weeks.

Is this a coded message?
I've heard of swing bridges. It doesn't take a great leap in imagination to swinger bridge. And playing?? tournaments?? |
|
By:
Swinging would be an added bonus. No tournaments yet, the weekend away will be my first competitive event.

I have often thought about learning bridge but the business of relying on another person to win has always put me off. But if you can have random draws for partners then maybe it won't be so bad. And I like the idea of duplicate bridge.
Although where I would find the time to learn I don't know ![]() I would appreciate you keeping us updated on your bridge experience, GoOnThen, and anybody else who plays. |

A superb game, I don't play as often as I used to but my mum is still completely hooked and plays very regularly. I much prefer duplicate bridge and can't really see the point of playing contract unless it's a very social bridge club. It gets my mum out of the house and meeting up with her mates so I'm all for it!

My late Uncle used to play for Barbados we have a photo of him playing against Omar Sharif.

Some great apps available for practising on your own. I use neural play.

Would urge anyone to take up bridge -a brilliant game with many layers of challenge and complexity
-one can choose a standard to aim at ..from house games to international i.e.from social to serious -it keeps brain cells busy and probably healthier for longer -one can find it anywhere in the world -online ,cruises ,hotels etc. -people can play it well into their eighties and nineties Go for it -lots to gain ,little to lose. |

I might have to suggest bridge at the local working mens club.
My strip poker nights were a success at first, until several of the butchest players refused to remove their boxies in the true spirit of the game. |
|
By:
If you can count to thirteen you can play Bridge.
A fascinating game and as previously stated keeps your brain active. The obvious downside is the age of most players,a Bridge club does resemble a retirement home. |

Still at it and finally seem to be making headway.Played 4 times this week. I definitely feel mentally sharper as a result.Only complaint is the standard of female talent on show is woeful.
