Normally he's beating off them Africans but this time he beat an American.

looked better tonight than he did in the 10k

By:
yes great run , matches virens record

people forget that Verin also came 4th in the marathon.
By:
Sorry to be pedantic, but he came fifth in the Marathon. Still pretty remarkable considering he had had no real plan to run in it and it was the day after the 5000m final. Perhaps the absence of the Africans in Montreal meant he hadn't extended himself to the max in winning the 5k.

Also, unlike Farah, Viren had to run heats in the 10k.
By:
Meaning at the 1976 Olympics, Viren ran 67 competitive Kilometres.

By:
did Viren not blood dope?
By:
He was one of the pioneers of blood-doping.

To be fair Mo's coach is/was well dodgy.
By:
Then again to be the greatest you have to hold the world record at some point, preferably more than once and for a long time.
This is why he is not as great as Coe eg, not yet. |
By:
Ah yes Jed it was 5th in the marathon. Rememember watching Viren in 76 and hoping he would win the marathon as well.

Was it Lopez I am getting mixed up with? Track runner 5 and 10 and 4th in marathon
By:
the lack of heats massively reduces the achievement. Foster was pronouncing him the GOAT. Laughable but not surprising given he was also an egg n spoon runner back in the day

The world record thing is not an exact science though lfc - pretty unarguable that until Bolt emerged Carl lewis was the greatest sprinter-long jumper in history and he only ever briefly held the world record for the 100m.

Mo for me... Viren's 67 now.
