Bought the complete series 1 & 2 on DVD (the remastered edition), it is still one of the best comedies ever produced. Only 12 episodes and seen them all before more than once, the golden age of British TV Comedy. And didn't go for overkill, just kept it to 12, absolute classic. Have to be honest not as funny as it was over 30 years ago, time has moved on and a bit dated now, but can still sit back and enjoy it.

Basil Fawlty:  Where's Sybil?
Manuel:        ¿Que?
Basil Fawlty:  Where's Sybil?
Manuel:         Where's... the bill?
Basil Fawlty:  No, not the bill! I own the place!

Being rerun currently, sat down to watch but got bored after 5 minutes.
Was funny in it's day but, for me, I watched it too often.

John Cleese wrote an episode of the Doctor series that was based in a small hotel with a henpecked proprietor.

Wandering off-topic but the Doctor series did have some high-profile writers such as Cleese, Chapman, Graeme Garden and Bill Oddie.

Google finds this:
This episode inspired writer John Cleese to write the epic Fawlty Towers; it is based on a real-life hotel owner who hosted the Monty Python team.

Would I Lie To You?

Featuring the comic genius, Lee Mack.

The hotel was in fact Woburn Grange Country Club. Emile , the owner at that time, was said to have won it in a card game. I don't know if the story is true but he was definitely a gambler and bookmaker.

David Mitchell excellent as is Lee Mack.
Mrs Brown leaves me cold.

Agree with all praise for WILTY. Mitchell and Mack are excellent, as is Rob Brydon. Guests Bob Mortimer and Rhod Gilbert are also worth their fees. Lots of clips on Youtube.

That is because we can only watch the same joke so many times, however funny it was to start with.
Comedy has to keep reinventing itself akabula.

The only thing I would question now was the treatment of Manuel(Andrew Sachs), not sure it would be quite PC today,
I even thought it was a bit cruel at the time, but very funny at the time.

Does not seem the comedy like we used to have now, perhaps tastes have changed, and I am older?

Are Dad never use to watch much TV but Fawlty Towers was one programme the whole family would watch every week, it was so funny and he always had a good laugh watching it. Been 15 years now since he died and still miss him. And still have days and weeks when it’s just as painful as it was 15 years ago. And Fawlty Towers is one of those things which always trigger memories of Dad.

I think a lot of it why it was so good and compared to comedy shows today. The amount of thought that Cleese particularly put into the series. If you listen to him being interviewed he clearly gave every aspect of the show so much consideration. It was not just thrown together, and Cleese had many years experience in comedy which he put into F.T. I agree with some comments above it's a bit dated now and how many times is the same joke funny, but it still stands up pretty well. A masterpiece of TV comedy.

Only 2 series and 12 episodes and no Christmas Special, and not like today if someone gets a good idea they usually milk it to death.
Report terry mccann August 15, 2016 9:16 PM BST
talking of mother Johnson that one is on right now on gold--maybe the best of the lotLaugh
Report ebulGery August 15, 2016 9:23 PM BST
You are right Tell Dell, Cleese put a lot into it.

It probably only stood the two series.

We saw that with 'the Office' only two series.

One of my all time favourites 'The League of Gentlemen', I thought that only stood two series and a good Christmas special,

after that not quite the same

Report RLKingPunter August 16, 2016 12:45 PM BST
The 1st 2 series of The League Of Gentlemen took some beating but the single best episode of a comedy since Fawlty Towers was when Count Arthur Strong went up in that plane, it was called The Day the Clocks went Back , that was the funniest thing ive seen in years.

Last Of the Summer Wine was a much gentler comedy with a nice atmosphere. Was good in the early days, probably went on too long.
