The foreign bus driver is in a low status job and is trying to assert his position over indigenous poor white people as he thinks they don't like him.

I knew some chaps from the pub, who worked in the next town.

This is when buses had a conductor as well as a driver. And the door was on the back of the bus.

They used to catch the morning bus to get to work from the bus depo.

One day the driver was sitting in his cabin, waiting for the conductor to get on.
So they rung the bell and the bus went off without the conductor.
Then if someone was waiting at a  stop, they rung the bell to stop the bus for people to get on or off. And then rung it again for the bus to pull away.

When they got to their stop they rung the bell to get off, and the last one off rung the bell for the driver to carry on.
I wonder how far he got before he cottoned on?
