Confusion had surrounded the exact number of participants following the release of Richard McLaren's explosive report into Russia's state-run doping programme last month.
The Russian Olympic Committee had submitted an original entry list of 389 athletes but that has been significantly reduced by 118 after international federations were asked, by the IOC, to individually assess the anti-doping record of each Russian athlete.
The IOC said in a statement: "271 athletes will form the team entered by the Russian National Olympic Committee (ROC) from the original entry list of 389 athletes."

There has been plenty of tampering of samples in all countries over many years. Russia is continually painted as the bad guy. This is the Western media angle. Drug taking has been proven to be rife among the American team back in 1984 but the rigorous testing wasn't in place then. Innocent athletes should not be punished due to the actions of others imho.
