Interesting stat,
The medal table standings if the EU competed as a single super state like the US say, and even without GB is EU - 165 medals US - 84 China - 51 GB - 50 Russia - 38 *Russia with reduced team this year obviously |
By:
yes it shows just how powerful and successful countries such as the US and Britain are in sport
By:
if EU was keeping pace in comparison with the US it should have won 2268 medals.
or with Britain then 1350. Europe seems to be made up of countries in sporting and cultural decline |
By:
you might say they could not win those medals over one olympic games, but then the games have been going for over a hundred years and those are the medals that could have been won.
By:
could Britain win as many medals as the whole of the EU combined, yes it is possible.
By:
Table shows Europeans are the dominant Continent. South Africa are the first of the african nations on the list at No. 22 with 7 medals.
By:
they should be if they are entering 50 athletes for every one Australian eg
or whatever the ratio is in relation to the US, or even Britain if you take britain on its own |
By:
the question is why are countries such as the US and Britain and Australia so successful and European countries less so
By:
Australia less so in recent years
By:
US has population of 300 mil, Europe must have 500 mil, so its proportional, except for China who have a Billion is it ?
By:
no its not proportional because the US only enters 1 athlete for every 50? european athletes
as does Britain |
By:
Ahh, I see where you're coming from now. So yes it is remarkable how well Britian is doing and the US would probably top the medals table if Europe only sent one competitor for every event.
By:
The funding for bike events cost 30million this time
Whats the worth of the metals they have got as a result? Each gold medal Is worth around 600 dollars |
By:
Its simply state largesse in areas deemed more worthy than others.
By:
The USA have left at least 5 gold medals at home due to their brutal qualification system.
By:
Gutsy display by the GB womens hockey team. Despite four of their players going off injured, they are beating a higher ranked team 3-0.
By:
How have they left gold medals at home Ham?
By:
russian who beat ? conlan unlikely to box in the final. !

Mikael they have the American Trials where the top 3 qualify. If you feck up there is no second chances. They were several feck ups from athletes considered amongst the favourites for their events (Lopez 800m, Felix 200 etc). Whereas the UK and other countries operate a 2+1 system. 2 fastest at the trials and 1 wildcard (they have to meet certain criteria obviously). If the US used the 2+1 system they'd win a lot more.

The two sisters running for gb just shows how pathetic and desperate gb are for medals. Mo is from Somalia living in usa. Froome is for Kenyan living in uk. When ireland and the rest where doing the same uk where slaging them off. Cricket/rugby etc they dont care. Hypocrites and the two sisters just shows it up. The sister who came fourth said im glad to get fourth running for gb. FFS. Only reason your doing it is you have no chance running for you home country as your not good enough. So good aul GB will take you on board and cream in the studio like your their own. What a bunch of idiots.

Clueless commentators obsessing about Mola in the Triathlon ,because he is leading the World Cup ......only because most top men have only entered a few races.
Whenever the Brownlees enter he is left behind in the swim and never gets back to them on the bike .......surprise ,surprise this is what is happening .well it's a surprise to the commentators . |
