we are sitting on 300 yrs of coal.
science tells us we are on the cusp of Fusion - free energy?
so why spend the cash on a huge white elephant.
Germany's solar energy output just exceeded their
coal burning output.

burn coal and phase in renewables. 10 percent to 20 percent - till it's 100 percent?

one accident with the most toxic substance on the planet ? very sensible. very green.
low carbon - high uranium.

Germany's solar energy output just exceeded their coal burning output.

Where did that come from? How does that compare with their output from gas and oil?

Coal is the dirtiest energy source of all. There is radioactive material in the smoke from coal burning power stations.
One of Europe's biggest nuclear power stations is just across the channel at Dunkirk, so why worry about Hinkley Point?

Can't find it in my history? read it an hour ago?
Found this instead - looks like they might just do it?
maybe?

India is going solar, new wind turbines with no blades. Chimney shaped.

Hopefully when we are out of the eu we will start mining and build coal power stations, given how fast technology moves they will be able to capture the carbon emissions.

Sadly we are probably tied to mass murderer Blairs promises on going green.

Newclear power has advanced too, they are already making inroads so that the waste product can be burnt again.
Report ebulGery July 31, 2016 11:45 PM BST
One can capture carbon emissions but having done that, what can we do with them?

We can capture Nuclear waste products, the same problem, what can we do with it.

Zorro, we are a long way from getting Nuclear Fusion that works. Unless it produces more energy out than in we have not achieved anything.

Germany will not go the Nuclear power route they are relying on renewables solar and wind. This is inefficient and costly to build.

But once built would give them free energy, sunlight and wind are free. I believe we ourselves should do more in this direction.

I read that Germany banned nuclear power stations following the tsunami which wrecked a Japanese power station. Because they get so many tsunamis in Germany Laugh

As a result Germany cannot generate sufficient electricity to meet their needs so have to import it from France - who generate it in nuclear stations Crazy
You truly couldn't make this stuff up Laugh

Report ebulGery August 1, 2016 12:12 AM BST
They banned Nuclear power before the tsunami.

Still you never know we may get a tsunami?

The UK is separated form Europe by a Tsunami that happened in 6100 BC, caused by a collapse of rock into the sea from Norway.

It came 25 miles inland.

That was in a Neil Oliver program.

I think we should do that myself

They should be banned except for offshore, maybe.

These things make a constant noise and make the countryside look unnatural.

We could get all our renewable energy from wave power....we have a massive coastline.

Report Ovalman. August 1, 2016 6:41 PM BST
In 2007 Strangford Lough became home to the world's first commercial tidal stream power station, SeaGen. The 1.2 megawatt underwater tidal electricity generator, part of Northern Ireland's Environment and Renewable Energy Fund scheme, takes advantage of the fast tidal flow in the lough which can be up to 4 m/s. Although the generator is powerful enough to power up to a thousand homes, the turbine has a minimal environmental impact, as it is almost entirely submerged, and the rotors turn slowly enough that they pose no danger to wildlife.[13][14][15]

From wiki.

Well Albania produce 90%, give or take, of their energy from hydro power so ask them ebulGery.

Hydro is an environmental disaster for fish .

In the US they are reversing many of the projects built due to the enviromental impacts on fish .

Tidal power may work in a few choice locations but i suspect we are a long way away from harnessing the waves in an economic way ,the sea (saltwater) is a very challenging environment for engineers to overcome .

Not to mention the ecological impacts ,even offshore wind the impact on fish ,cetaceans ect are not fully understood ,a lot more work still to be done .

If its any consolation my computer and table lamp are powered from solar so all the sh1t i type on here is eco friendly Laugh

Hydro power is not wave power is it?...electricity is produced by damming rivers!

Tidal power only works in a few locations, as breadnbutter pointed out.

Wind farms work anywhere there is wind.

Haivng googled it apparently there is a difference ebulGery, but end of the day it's bloody water as far as my perhaps ignorant view is concerned.

As for wind farms, best keep eating those baked beans if they work anywhere there is wind lol!!!

its not 90% but is a surprisingly high percentage

found this article which although is biased is very informative ...a few nuggets in there ,surprised at the level of investment from western money houses .

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/feb/20/balkan-dam-boom-threatens-europes-last-wild-waterways

surprised the environment is being compromised in such a fashion ,as i mentioned earlier the USA are reversing hydro projects because of the impacts on  the environment ,species like fish are KEY to the ecosystem ,once they are gone it all goes .

The impacts on the environment are massive ,are well documented yet countries like Albania are trashing the ecosystem and with it the entire environment for short term gain ,i dont believe the people their know whats in store for them .
Here what a country that understands the impact through experience is doing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VipVo8zPH0U

this is not a one off .

Those wind parks are usually on farmland anyway, so the areas didn't look remotely natural to begin with. Nor do all that many people live right next to them to be disturbed.
