TBF a parachute in a balloon is a good idea. I think they used to wear them in spotter balloons in ww1.

I wonder if the unfortunates were fried by the electricity cables, burnt by the basket catching fire or died due to sudden impact on the ground?

there was a similar crash into elec wires in australia not long ago.all perished.

All electrocuted sounds a bit wrong, electricity follows paths and a basket hung below a balloon and the people IN the basket doesn't sound like one it want to take. For example, birds can sit on a single power lines fine.
