Although the Athletics is the Blue Ribbon event of the Olympics (and for many TV viewers, the only reason they will show up) I'll be tuning into the Rowing, specifically:

Mens Pair (Two rowers, one oar each)

There's been a thread on 'The greatest ever sporting performer' in here recently, but if this was ever widened to encompass a team then the New Zealand Mens Pair would be my choice.

Hamish Bond and Eric Murray go into the Olympic regatta on a winning streak of 68 races over the past 8 years. They have beaten the best combo's the rest of the world can throw at them, to the extent that all nations have taken their best oarsman away from this event so as not to 'waste' their top guys against the unstoppable Kiwi's.

Rio may well end up being a lap of honour then, but these guys are the best men's Rowing crew ever, so if you want to see sporting perfection, then tune in to this event.

Women's Double (Two rowers, two oars each)

Kath Grainger and Victoria Thornley go for Great Britain, against a backdrop of rowing politics and accusations of bullying against their coach. Nonetheless if the GB boat can medal here it will be a huge achievement for both women, and would have to be a fitting farewell to Kath Granger who has shouldered (and delivered) most of the expectation of British Women's rowing for an entire generation.

Mens Eight

GB has stacked this boat with our best oarsmen and it's coached by the greatest rowing coach ever, Jurgen Grobler, whose crews have won Olympic Golds right back to the 1980's. America, Germany and Canada will be in the mix and it's going to be brutal but compelling viewing!

Women's Eight

America are the hot favourites but GB have a real spirit in their boat as will as some decent athletes with plenty of experience.  They won't fail for lack of guts that's for sure.

Women's Single

Features the incredible Ekaterina Karsten in her 7th Olympics at the age of 44. She has two Olympic golds, one silver and two bronze medals and whilst not the force of old, it'll be a brave man who says she won't be there or thereabouts for the Final here. Watch out for the Irish rower Sanita Puspure who comes from Dublin by way of, umm Latvia and, in the absence of a GB boat in this category(the only one in which GB does not have representation) then I'll be shouting for her.

Whatever you're watching out for, I hope we get to see some great and above all, clean action.

Can't wait!

All the cycling events, indoor track, and the road races.
Not remotely interested in athletics, but will watch the rowing.
Report Foinavon July 29, 2016 5:03 PM BST
Don't watch it either. I wish Sky would buy it so we could have less disruption on the main channels. Come to think of it they should buy Wimbledon too.
Report rogerthebutler July 29, 2016 5:09 PM BST
Anyone else got any insights into the sports that will be on - interesting stories, rivalries, potential tear-jerking moments etc?

I'm an Olympics junkie and will show up for pretty much any sport at the Games, but it'll be even more interesting if I know a thing or twenty about some of the more obscure sports that'll be on.
Report Degs July 29, 2016 5:10 PM BST
Disruption to BBC channels ? FFS. How will we manage without the one show and celebrity knitting for 2 weeks.

Anyway, to answer the OP question .......

As with every Olympics over nearly 50 years, the athletics sprints for me.

Will Bolt do the triple triple ? (I hope so)

Will wee willie Merritt do the 200/400 double (I hope not)

A DQ in any event for Gatlin will be a bonus.
Report Foinavon July 29, 2016 5:17 PM BST
Agree, there's too much carp on the BBC already, we don't need more. Its usually the rubbish which survives though and decent programmes are sacrificed to free up time.

Really looking forward Rio Happy

Will be following in particular -

Nick Skelton and Big Star - Showjumping
William Fox-pitt - Eventing
Ashley McKenzie - Judo
Andy Murray - Tennis.

Will try to keep track of the above competitors but mainly I will be dipping in and out watching a bit of everything, except probably the Curling... it's too much like housework Mischief

Bring it on! Love

Enjoy the lot, like the fact the minority sports start about six days before the athletics, saw Handball & Voleyball in London both enjoyable & great atmosphere, not sure how well attended these sports will be in Rio, London was the first Olympics where almost every event spectator wise was sold out.

Another one for roger.  Remember Aaron Cook from London 2012?  He was the world number 1 in taekwondo and wasn't selected, (claimed he wasn't selected because he trained independently from the GB squad) and his place went to Lutalo Muhammad who ended up winning a bronze.  Lutalo is competing again in 2016 and so is Aaron Cook ... for ..... Moldova! They could end up fighting each other.

Will be watching everything time allowing; in fervour if there is a GB & NI athlete performing..

However the Olympics should be the pinnacle of every competing sport which isn't the case for Golf. Tennis. Football.

If the Olympic one-legged arse-kicking contest was on I would rather watch that than the Olympic Golf.

Long John Silver was a legend in that discipline and could have had the headline writers salivating when Silver won Gold. Cool

Some more trivia.  Last week at the Londeon DL was the first time a pre 1990 world record was beaten in an individual pre 1990 established women's track or field event (such was the predominant use of anabolic steroids by female athletes pre the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the Eastern Bloc, doping was a far bigger issue back then), when Kendra Harrison broke the 100m hurdles WR.  The 3,000m SC 5,000m 10,000m 400m hurdles, pole vault, triple jump and hammer are all relatively new events in womens' athletics whereas the javelin was redesigned.  The 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, shot put and discus records all hark back to the even darker days of doping in sport.  The thing is Kendra Harrison didn't qualify as she was off form during the US trials.

The first clean athelete on the all time world list at shot put is Valerie Adams mentioned below at number 23.  21 of those ahead of her are pre 1990 and the other one is now serving a lifetime ban.

Report jed.davison July 30, 2016 8:39 PM BST
Absolutely. Hope everything goes well for her roger.

Personally, I will be glued to the track and field and the swimming, less so to the boxing and I might watch the odd football match if there's a player I like playing.

As usual I suspect the whole thing will be spoiled by my obsessional hatred of bad punditry and the BBC's outrageous partisanship.

Finally, I look forward to some amusing examples of Brazilian maladministration. I found it quite disappointing that London was almost seamlessly put together when I had imagined it would be a carnival of official ineptitude. We need another Norbert Sudhaus or something like that, although the hosts will not be looking for another Cornelius Horan. Laugh

and so is Aaron Cook ... for ..... Moldova

Had to Wiki this as I never heard of him, turns out he is British born yet declared for the Isle of Man when he didn't get picked for GB team and now has declared for Moldovia, for the Rio Olymipics. Thats the type of thing that has taken the gloss of the Olympics for me, it going on wholesale in all countries now.
Report jed.davison July 31, 2016 12:02 AM BST
Funny stickyvicky, I think the flags of convenience are a good thing. For much the same reason I am totally opposed to a blanket ban on athletes from any given nation.

The Olympics are not meant to be about nationalities - de Coubertin loathed the idea that a Nation should claim credit for the brilliance of the individual, and he woul surely loathe the idea that one's nationality should debar one from participation in the Olympic Games.

I think de Coubertin would have approved of drug use in Athletics - citius, altius, fortius. Ben Johnson would have been realising his dream, not tainting it.
