Ibrahima Sonko questioned why the lettering wasn't straight.
Clarkson thought the logo needed to be straight and also have some sort of alcohol-related theme. He did, however, like the colouring. The Mighty Mac thought it was crap. He commented that the colours were all wrong and the logo was unmemorable. Go On Then wrote that the colours needed changing. Akabula thought that the colours were off-putting. S. Kenbo agreed about the colours being wrong, but didn't mind the logo being skewed. He also suggested something should be in the middle of the design. Crags suggested a surf-related image in the middle as the business is in a popular surfing area. Coachbuster considered it a good effort, didn't like the colour choices originally but later thought they were okay for a seaside shop. Foinavon liked it, commenting it was a clean design, but suggested the colours might need changing. GHH thought it was absolutely ghastly, commenting that the first rule of design was cyan should never be used. Zorrostrikes thought that the colours should be darker. Cooperman thought that the colours were more suitable for an ice cream or sweet shop. Polo Minx thought that the colours and design were great, ideal for the seaside. Kincsem thought that the letters should be straight as nobody liked curved writing. He also thought the font was weak and the business name was irrelevant. Crisp 77 thought that the business didn't need a logo. Charlie thought it was a poor logo. Aunty Post commented that most successful logos do not include the name of the business. Jack Hacksaw hated the colours and suggested a more modern font was needed. |

And now, here is my revised design.
I have created a mascot, Corky, to feature in the centre of the logo. I hope the owner might incorporate him in shop promotions, along the lines of Corky's Deals Of The Week etc. |

All comments, especially from those who offered an opinion earlier, would be most welcome. I'm always keen to find improvement wherever possible.

Alcohol adverts can't be targeted at under 18's so you would have to be careful with a fun mascot
By:
I'm pretty sure you would not get away with a cartoon character
By:
really like it - but crisp 77 might be right about getting it past
the censor. i spent yrs getting my HND in graphics and think it's better than my crappola. |

You need to perhaps abandon this logo and consider a complete new design. The second one still has colours more suitable for a store that wants to attract the younger market and unfortunately the cartoon character says much the same. The design has been used extensively before, coffee shops in particular. http://www.shutterstock.com/s/coffee+logo/search.html but not as far as I can see many off licences. You need to identify the market demographic and work towards a clear message. You can lose the Woolacombe anyway because it doesn't tell your potential customer anything(except where they are of course).

I think it is much better, notwithstanding the comments above.
I like the orange centre, maybe if it can't be a cartoon it could be the sun - or the beach? With the orange below the blue, I thought it resembled the sky and beach. I know its a diversion, but I'd try and include the beach/sky/sea in the logo - as that is what Woolacombe represents. |
By:
Good morning, gentlemen.
Many thanks indeed for the comments and suggestions so far, they're always much appreciated. With regards to leaving the place name of Woolacombe out of the logo, I'm afraid that is not an option. The owner has given me a reasonably free hand in the design, but he does want the trading name of Woolacombe Off Licence to be incorporated as it will appear on vehicles and stationery, not just above the door. |

Logged in to the wrong account by mistake. I am Poker Dane, apologies for the confusion.

You could add a tagline, maybe borrow one of Homer Simpson's
'Alcohol, the cause of, and answer too all of life's problems' |
By:
Where is the picture of the bird with the big tits? You need one of those to really attract people. It's an aspirational thing, advertising.
By:
Great idea, Jack, certainly something I will carefully consider, sir.

What about something like that but replace the people with bottles!! |

Great improvement.
I still think too many colours. Google "colour wheel" and see what goes with orange (keep the orange centre.) Corky looks too sober. ![]() You could expand the inner circle until it meets the blue and green bits i.e. make Corky bigger. If his left hand and glass and his right hand cover the lettering it won't be a problem. Possibly try it without the grey outer rim to see it is better or worse. You are getting there. |
By:
I think it's great. I hadn't thought about the political correctness of using a cartoon character until it was mentioned on here though. Hopefully it'll pass all our silly regulations.

Shouldn't the liquid in the glass be level?
By:
You need more sun / flames
Google "sun face cartoon" |
By:
Is the slanted nature of it inviting people to drink to excess? I think it should be straight.
By:
Many thanks for all your contributions, gentlemen, they're certainly much appreciated.
Foinavon. You are of course correct, sir, in your observation that the wine should be level. The reason it is not is because it was originally drawn with Corky sloshing a bit over the side as he held his glass aloft as if to say "cheers!" After consideration, however, I felt that the droplets made the logo appear a tad too busy and I removed them, hoping that the slanted liquid alone would still achieve the desired effect. Stow. I have tried it with the lettering straight, sir, it's just my personal opinion that it looks slightly better on an angle. |
By:
You'll note that I have also changed the colouring and font of my original design, as suggested by the Chit Chat experts, to significant improvement in my view.
I'm very grateful to you all. |
By:
Crisp (a very apt name for this thread by the way).
![]() Many thanks indeed for you thoughts on the legality of Corky in the logo, it was certainly worth checking. After researching the guidelines, I am confident Corky will be fine. |

Why that has posted as Pokermonster is a mystery, I'm logged on as Poker Dane. How bizarre!
By:
You are forgetting that alcohol is not allowed in Islam.
So I guess in a couple of years they'll go out of business. |

Just bumping to the top for AP.

Following on from what we were talking about yesterday, AP: funnily enough I've had two gentlemen (not regular Chit Chatters as far as I know) contact me via PMs to ask if I might be able to draw them something similar to the Stars & Stripes pool ball created for an American friend and posted up on another thread. They're after a Union Jack ball and a Welsh Dragon ball with personalised logos on the spots.
It's not really a problem and I'm happy to help out, but both guys seem to be under the erroneous impression that I can knock this sort of thing out in half an hour or so which, alas, is rather wide of the mark. Folks are either vastly underestimating the time and effort involved, or overestimating my talents. The truth is they take me bloody hours! ![]() |

Looks like quite a queue for these pool ball logos.
By:
Too true, Crisp! I could do with a rest.
By:
I like the revised logo, colours as well despite my earlier comment.
If as Crisp suggests the cartoon character isn't acceptable in that form you could substitute it for a toff type character similar to Johnie Walker although maybe just head and hat. |
By:
BTW give us a break with these bad jokes.

He balked at my suggestion that the logo could be banned and it was accepted by the client.

Cheers, Akabula. :)
I'll have to lay off the terrible puns for now anyway, sir. I'm halfway through a bottle of Courvoisier whilst lying on the couch watching The Hateful Eight and, as a consequence, am now tight against the cushion. |
By:
The Courvoisier should help cushion the blow of any criticism your logo has had.
By:
Colours only work if their fluorescent
By:
Oval.
Do you mean that you preferred the original colours, sir? |
By:
I only see 2 pics of the Off License on this thread, the other pic is a cueball.
The Off License I hate the colours but if they were fluorescent they would stand out to me. The 2nd pic works with the face and glass of wine but the colours have to stand out. I know this is to be on all stationary but the one that would mean most to me is shop front and fluorescent if lit up would work. |
