A late night trip to the super market cheers.

Use a self service checkout
Self service machines in supermarkets often do not have a limit on the number of coins you can use per transaction. They can also usually sort them faster than cashier would (and with less tutting!).

It is easiest to use a few at a time rather than buying your weekly shop with pennies, and preferably not when there is a large queue behind you!

spent it all -

go to a big supermarket - they have coin machines
throw it all in the spit out a ticket and they pay you
out at desk. take 5percent? for themselves.
Report cooperman July 18, 2016 2:20 PM BST
The machines deduct a percentage and you are given a voucher to spend instore for the remainder. This at my local ASDA (would never use one).
Report Ted Brogan July 18, 2016 2:23 PM BST
Bag it up in coin bags (free from a bank) and once you get to a nice figure (Maybe £10, £20, £30 etc) then take them all down to the bank and exchange for paper money

i think HSBC have coin machines where you can empty your mixed coins you need an account though

might be worth checking your coins 1st though as there are some rare ones out there that go for quite a bit on ebay

have a look at changechecker

My local Sainsburys has a coinstar machine like zorrostrikes was talking about.

Empty everything from 50p pieces down into it a tin every evening and then once or twice a year take the tin down to the supermarket.

Sainsburys keep 5% (I think) but the machine spits out a voucher you can exchange for hard cash.

Bung it on the favourite in the next race at the Billy Hills next door.
Report dukeofpuke July 18, 2016 2:49 PM BST
if you have a kew gardens 50p its worth about £30 to £50 on ebay depending on condition as only 200,00 were minted

another one is the 2012 olympic swimming coin you need the one with lines that hide the face £820

Coppers should be taken out of circulation.

I carry all mine around in a sock like a cosh, on the off chance that I bump into Kay Burley. When I do, I'll let her have my spare change.

I put them into a jar and use it as a dumbell for exercise. The weight of £15 of loose change resulted in me straining a tendon in my shoulder that took six months to heal.
Report Pokermonster July 18, 2016 6:37 PM BST
Tesco charges 9.9 percent in their coin-sorting machines.
Report Money Tree cost me thousands!! July 18, 2016 6:39 PM BST
Small change should be abolished. Round up all prices to nit need it.
Report Pokermonster July 18, 2016 6:42 PM BST
A word of caution.

I used to have a massive Champagne bottle, a Balthazar I think, in which all my loose change was collected.  One day there was an almighty crack like a gunshot; the bottle had exploded under the weight of the coins.
Report jollyswagman July 18, 2016 8:44 PM BST

My 20ps,50s and £1and £2s go into a large Martells brandy bottle, usually empty it when it's holiday time and get £300 ish, the last empty out was left longer than normal and the coins were 3/4 up the bottle which resulted in £680 which bought loads a €s.
Report Coachbuster July 18, 2016 11:49 PM BST

If I remember to, I sometimes check for pre-1992 pennies and tuppeny bits, as they were still genuine copper rather than copper-plated. If there were ever a collapse of the currency, then those coins would actually have value in terms of the value of the copper.

Wait until society implodes and we all go Mad Max. I've probably got enough now to trade for a pint of milk.
Report Money Tree cost me thousands!! July 19, 2016 2:52 PM BST
Some newer 2ps are also copper
