I speak French fairly fluently, Italian fairly fluently, and passable German. Only thing that interested me at school.
Report lfc1971 • July 12, 2016 12:17 PM BST
i am trying to learn French by watching the France24 news channel.
Report johnizere • July 12, 2016 12:17 PM BST
Can get by in French.. 1/10 in Greek. Can understand Welsh, but can't join in conversations, mainly due to being brought up in English speaking family, English father.
Report lfc1971 • July 12, 2016 12:19 PM BST
i can read French quite well, and understand it partially when listening to France 24. once that is ok i assume the next step will be to speak

Report johnizere • July 12, 2016 12:25 PM BST
Once you begin to 'think' in the language you are learning, it becomes easier to pick it up. Or so I'm told Plain
When I was learning French in school many years ago, I found myself heading down that route, and I find I still do it
occasionally when French stuff is on tv etc.

can ask "Can I go to the toilet please" in Irish Blush it was drilled into you in primary school, think every person in Ireland can say it and very little more Laugh
Report Foinavon • July 12, 2016 12:45 PM BST
Fluent in French having lived there for several years. Understand a smidgen of Spanish, Italian and German.
Report jed.davison • July 12, 2016 1:06 PM BST
I can read Spanish as well, never really learnt it as such, just pretty straightforward constructions and having studied Latin and Greek the vocab is nearly always guessable within context. Tried to teach myself Dutch at one point, too many i's and j's though. And the only Dutch I'm ever likely to use is 'couple of grammes of your finest' anyway.

Supposedly good for preventing the onset of Alzheimers. Although I forget where I read that.
Report pantsonfire • July 12, 2016 1:24 PM BST
I get by in Russian.
Report jed.davison • July 12, 2016 1:46 PM BST
My ambition is to learn Romanian, because of its closeness to Latin.

May visit Bucharesti in a couple of months.Learning a little bit of the lingo at the moment.

Thought I had a good ear for Language, worked with a few Poles for a year or so, didn't get further than the days of the week. I can sing 'Wislaaa Krakooov' with the best of them though, and I know how to tell a Gornik fan to **** off.
Report Culvin • July 12, 2016 2:04 PM BST
pantsonfire. How come you know how to get by in Russian? You been there? I want to visit St Petersburg and maybe also Novosibirsk in Siberia.
Report PatraTheCat • July 12, 2016 2:29 PM BST
Spanish, although I'm cursed by the fact that I just can't roll my r's.

Well, I sort of can if I pause saying the word, roll the r, and then continue saying the word, but it isn't very practical to do that every time I want to say "dog".

I can probably write Spanish better than about half the forum can write English, though.
Report DStyle • July 12, 2016 2:35 PM BST
it will probably be little more than an intellectual pursuit in 20 years time. maybe less.
Report jed.davison • July 12, 2016 3:04 PM BST
That's all it's ever been for me. I would cross the road to avoid a Frenchman lol
Report Makybe_Diva • July 12, 2016 3:42 PM BST
The Lonely Planet Fast Talk guides are excellent if you need to learn a language to get by on holiday.

I have the German, Italian and French editions.

In Singapore we had a phrase, "Tiga Suku".

It translates to, "75% mad" ... just like Scottish fitba!

If you want to know how many languages you understand, try working as a self-employed translator. It's amazing how many you can comprehend if somebody offers to pay you to translate them.

All the European languages are related (bar Hungarian and Finnish/Estonian, I think). For instance, if you're an English speaker who knows German, then you can understand Dutch even if you don't know a word of Dutch. Plenty of Eastern European languages are broadly similar to each other, but employ different alphabets. So in the past I've been able to use the bit of Ukrainian I know to argue with a Pole.

English speakers have a huge headstart in learning the vocabulary of other European languages, simply because the English language (like the British people themselves) is just the sum of thousands of years of constant immigration. There's nobody on the Continent who hasn't at some time conquered us or traded with us and added elements of their own language to our vast list of words. The genius of English is that it thereby evolved as a language in which people with no formal knowledge can "get by" - you don't need to get the grammar right to be understood, and there's always a word similar to your own for what you want to say.
