Report tictacman1 July 8, 2016 11:45 PM BST
Andrea Leadsom has said being a mother makes her a better choice for Prime Minister than Theresa May because it gives her a “very real stake” in Britain’s future prosperity.

In highly personal remarks, the mother of three told The Times newspaper she was sure the Home Secretary must be "really sad" not to have children as she suggested that her motherhood status meant she had more invested in the future than her leadership rival.

"Genuinely I feel that being a mum means you have a very real stake in the future of our country," Mrs Leadsom said.

She went onto say Mrs May "possibly has nieces, nephews, lots of people. But I have children who are going to have children who will be directly party of what happens next."

See straight through you say Goonthen?

Rachel Sylvester: "Do you feel like a mum in politics?"

Andrea Leadsom: "Yes. So...

RS: "Why and how?"

AL: "So really carefully because I am sure, I don't really know Theresa very well but I am sure she will be really really sad she doesn't have children so I don't want this to be 'Andrea has children, Theresa hasn't' because I think that would be really horrible.

"But genuinely I feel being a mum means you have a very real stake in the future of our country, a tangible stake.

"She possibly has nieces, nephews, lots of people, but I have children, who are going to have children, who will directly be a part of what happens next.
"So it really keeps you focused on 'what are you really saying?'. Because what it means is you don't want a downturn but 'never mind, let's look ahead to the ten years', hence it will all be fine. My children will be starting their lives in that next ten years so I have a real stake in the next year, the next two."

What the hell have gays got to do with anything? She took a cheap shot at someone who has been unable to have kids by saying it made her less equipped to do the job.

She was going on about this through the referendum debates. Staring the camera with that fixed rictus grin and reminding everyone every couple of minutes that "she's a mother". As if she's as surprised as we are that someone would dip their wick there. Twice.

Comes across as slightly unhinged to me.

The next PM is going to be one of the most important in our history. She'll be taking the job while the pound is tanking, we're facing a possible employment crisis as firms are threatening to leave, we're going to face a migrant influx if anything as anyone thinking about it knows they've got 2 years max to get in and we have to negotiate a host of new trade and diplomatic deals despite the fact we've got next to no experts in these areas as they've been collectively bargained through the EU for a generation. And some are thinking of giving the job to a woman who seems to be amazed she has kids, and is appalled that her words have been written exactly as they were said and not the complete opposite as she lied.

Now for a moment step out of your media polluted comfort zone and imagine the following. AL was offered a chance to give her vision of a post Brexit UK. For well over an hour she gave that vision.Throughout she was constantly asked about how being a mother made her different as a candidate to TM ... Go back to the above transcript and view the journalist asking her "first"  question. Now imagine a couple of seconds before that the journalist for the umpteenth time asking "How do you think your role as a mother makes you any different to Theresa May"? Then take the perfectly honest and straightforward answer given. You might also wish to reflect on the fact that none of her opinions and ideas for a post brexit UK warrant a mention. The journalist had only one brief. Nail her on motherhood. The article was probably written before the interview. Tebbit nailed this on LBC earlier today.

Haven't read the Times but have listened to the interview.

Fact is she wasn't misquoted at all and then hilariously tried to claim she'd actually said the opposite which, like much of her cv, was a load of horsesh!t.

She's the one who's been mentioning that she was a mother all through the referendum so it's not ridiculous to 're-visit that theme. If she thought it wasn't relevant why bring it up so often in the last couple of months? It's legitimate to then ask what she thinks the difference is with someone without children.

And, at the end of the day, if she's so daft she got led up the garden path here then it doesn't bode well for her skills in negotiating the best deal for the country. At best she was naive in the extreme. I actually think she knew exactly what she said and actually thought in some way, some people might think it would make the remotsst difference. But then, given the whole quit campaign was a tissue of fast unravelling lies she maybe thinks it's an acceptable tactic.
