I'm very bad on recognising faces as I don't do "celebrity". Is it that Bouvier woman?

That's a good un Vel. If I can recognise her then the likeness is spot on. I do pub quizzes and rely on others for the picture round as I haven't a clue usually.

I'm got the same predicament. I've lost a few bets  watching telly, betting that so-and-so was in such-and-such a film, etc.

Must be John Jnr...was doing pop "icons" for the project and it was either this image or Marilyn Monroe.

Good choice, Marilyn's been overdone by some American dude,,, er, what's his name now? Grin

Foinavon - I hope u got some oil paints for Christmas...if you'd been in the right cafe with George Michael, you could have moaned loudly that you needed 5 grand for an artist's quality upgrade...and some SABLE brushes...Excited

Nah, somebody bought me a tin of pencils and a sharpener though. I'm going to give acrylics a whirl straight from the tube. Might practice by copying a Serov portrait and using the palette knives.
Too late to sponge off George now, unfortunately.

The Kennedy photo must have come from this photo-shoot since the dress is the same. Can't find your original.

I couldn't find it either - had a go a few weeks ago...curious to see similar in black and white...you'd never guess those high key colours from the shades of grey.

Now that we have reached 7000 views, did HANK HILL ever get his answer?

BETTY by Gerhard Richter...saw him paint this kind of thing on video...he just touched each part of the canvas with spots of thin paint...painted on a white surface...then he used a smallish blending brush to merge the blots of oil paint...quite an unusual technique - takes some finesse.

In Germany, this painting is really famous and popular - a bit like Vermeer's Girl With Pearl Ear-ring in Holland.

Photo-realism or even better. Takes real skill to do that. Impressive.

Beautiful sense of colour - it's a great skill just to mix those colours.
By:
Foinavon
When: 28 Dec 16 22:35
Yes, they are harmonious and probably derived from a limited palette of three or four colours plus white.
Was the colour matching shown on the video Vel?

Foinavon, he was using a large wooden tray - like an old serving tray - and a traditional hand-held palette...the tray was on a trolly...his brushes were laid out on the edges of the tray...he had his photo reference to hand...he wasn't pre-mixing the colours, but set the palette up from white to yellows, ochres, reds, then brown, green, blue, black...I didn't see him use a palette knife...he used small amounts of linseed oil.

The film showed the landscapes he did when he lived in East Germany and they were very poor, but he clearly improved a heck of a lot as he kept painting through the years.

I  had a chance to see that painting in Edinburgh - READER - but I couldn't make it that day...I was told by friends that the paint is thicker than you might expect...there was quite a thick slab of paint on the nape of the neck.

Interesting. Sounds like he spent a lot of time prepping the key colour matches beforehand. That's fine if you are working in oils which have a long drying time. Excellent paintings.
By:

When: 28 Dec 16 23:05
And the key word, really, is finesse...he really does dab the paint on gently, and he is in no hurry.

You are lucky to have seen it done.
The nearest I got was watching the portrait artists in Montmartre creating pastel likenesses in 30 minutes or so. They were surprisingly skilled in what they did.

Looking at the top of the hair...he would wait until the paint is a bit tacky, after a few days, then take a soft blending brush to pull the reddish background colour into the hair, to soften the edges.
By:
Velasquez
When: 28 Dec 16 23:16
Yeah - it was only video, remember! We had to ask for the video to be set up, upstairs in the gallery.

In the profile, the body of the hair is mainly solid colour, it's the fluffy edges which create the illusion.
Haven't done any painting over Christmas because of visitors. Looking forward to doing some more when they go home.

Saw a photo of that Egyptian Temple the other day, you know the one in the Bond film. Lovely ochres and earthy reds. Think that would look good as a pastel on rusty red paper. Might make a start in the morning.
