watched it on yesterday...........apart from no yanks in the escape the film was mostly based on the true story...........they dug and found the foundations of the tunnel..............the wood that the prisoners used and also a Nazi stamp the prisoners used on their documents ......the yanks did help built it but were long gone by the day of the escape
Seems to me that what they did was even more of an achievement than came over in the film. They were tunnelling through dry sand rather than soil which meant there was a constant problem with the tunnel collapsing on top of them.

Both Peter Butterworth and Talbot Rothwell himself were prisoners there at the time.
I can understand why they didn't do a Carry On Tunneling or some such, but would have been a great addition to the series.

Peter Butterworth was one of the vaulters covering for tunnellers during the 'Wooden Horse' escape. (Also at Stalag Luft III.)
He auditioned for the film but was considered to not look heroic.
