Some Sports Direct workers are being charged £10 a month "simply for the pleasure of being paid", says Unite's Steve Turner. Migrant workers who cannot set up a bank account are being paid by the sports retailer onto pre-paid debit cards, which cost £10 to set up and then have a monthly £10 fee, he says. When they use it in a cash machine they are charged 75p a time, and charged 10p per confirmation text.

"We know the card issuer... makes a £2 a month management fee... so who's making £8 out of this process? We don't know."

The card issuer doesn't charge to issue the cards, he adds.

The union has "not come across the level of exploitation in the use of pre-paid debit cards" as it has with Sports Direct, he tells MPs.

I switched the radio on not realising what was happening and for a few seconds I honestly thought it was David Brent.

The Unite officers are asked to describe the culture of Sports Direct in the warehouse.

"In the warehouse there is a culture of fear," says Luke Primarolo. "People are scared because they are working under a system that they know they could lose their employment at any moment."

Under the "strike system", workers don't have any recourse to defend themselves. You have a strike for spending too long in the toilet, excessive chatting, taking a day off sick or having to stay home because your children are sick, he says.

"When you have people under that much fear, they come into work ill."

People had chest pains, strokes, and there were 5 births or miscarriages.

Andy Sweeney, Chief Executive Officer, Best Connection Group, is being questioned. Some unpleasant allegations about working conditions from the committee.

"Have you heard of people being called selfish for wanting to leave at their allotted time?"

"Are you aware of the phrase new meat? It is commonly used by people who work there about new female employees?"

Mike Ashley's appearance in front of MPs got off to a brusque start. The opening exchange went -

MP: "If I may start with the review that you announced six months ago. You were personally undertaking this into working practices in Sports Direct. What's the current status of the review?" Mr Ashley: "Work in progress". MP:  "When will it be completed?" Mr Ashley: "Never". MP:  "It will never be completed?"  Mr Ashley: "Never be completed". MP:  "So how can you improve working practices if the review won't be completed?" Mr Ashley: "Because it's an ongoing process". Grin

The committee asks Mike Ashley how many people are getting injured. "It's a warehouse!" He is being asked about the number of ambulance call outs, which unions say are frequent.

Mr Ashley describes how he sees this happening. He says someone will "get on their radio and phone security and if they get a bit sweaty (like me now) and say to their manager they are feeling under the weather" an ambulance can then get called.

One MP says "I would suggest someone giving birth in a toilet in the warehouse isn't an over hasty call out for an ambulance". Grin

And rightly so. If an employer is paying you to work, that's what you should be doing.

Ashley came across as expected, poorly.
As an aside though why was Michelle Thomson part of this committee?
She's under investigation for mortgage fraud for which she lost the SNP whip and she has also had her work practices questioned.

Why aren't the Unite trade union doing their job supporting the workers.

This is a direct result of mass immigration, something Unite supports.
Unite too busy swanning off to Calais trying to circumvent the rules and bring in more cannon fodder for the likes of this scurrilous company.
