Have listened to a few documentaries and the premise is that islam is a peaceful religion:
Of the 3 big monolithic religions - so much is held in common:
First came Judaism - 600 BC ish- then Christianity - then Islam.
Islam preaches respect the other two- as 'people of the book'; belief in Adam and Eve and Angels
Mohammad - an orphan in what is now Saudi - taken under wing of an Uncle - sent to live with Beduin as a kid- was 'set upon' by 2 Angels who descended from the sky- opened hhim up and took out a black spot from his heart( sin taken away) - patched him up; grew up as a merchant and well known for honest dealings; at age 34 went into desert and fasted a'la Jesus and was tempted by the devil and met with Arch Angel Gabriel- then founded a religion and repeated Gabriel's teachings - led an army -went to his home city of Mecca and threw out those worshipping idols - stating only one god ; only killed soldiers - civilians and most certainly women and children were unharmed ; believed Jesus was a prophet not son of god- believed he was not crucified but god took him up to heaven before his impending death; Mohammed (Peace be upon him !) died aged 64 (?) and his body went up to heaven - from the Dome of the Rock, Jerusalem; Sunni Muslims and Shi'ite Muslims disagree who should lead their religion /race- one sect believing it is the Mohammed's descendants- the other that it should be those who are/ prove themselves to be most able whatever their line - must be Islamic of course;
Mecca - hosts the Haj each year- 2 million muslims journey there on pilgramage - over the centuries has been filled with faces /clothng from all over the world- mongolian/chinese/eastern/european etc- women with and without headcovering dependant on their country's customs - not a religios edict; the most populase Muslim country is Indonesia with 180million of em- USA 3 million and growing
In a golden age of reason all three religions existed together in Spain under the Moors who invaded what is now Iberia from 711ad for about 6 centuries - a flourishing of reason culture , kindly rule which led to the birth of the Renaissance- Arab writings had copied the teachings and mathematical knowledge from ancient greece - the originals libraries were destroyed in Europe ( sack of Rome/Constantinople etc) - this knowledge was translated from Arabic into Latin- back into Europe
So: what am i going to have for tea and why do current Muslims keep blowing themselves and others up?
The survival of the writings of Plato and Aristotle etc from ancient Greece had nothing to do with Islam. By the time of the burning of the library in Alexandria there were many copies in existence because of one reason....their work was attractive to early Christian thinkers.
The early Christian fathers admired Plato and Socrates as `unknown Christians`
It is because of this link between Christianity and ancient Greece and Rome that we have the Renaissance and later the European enlightenment.
This link between Christianity and ancient Greece and Rome is the reason for great new advances in science and art and the freedoms of European Christian countries

you are reciting 'yesterdays' ideas- i once thought like you- we can only be believe/ be educated by what we absorb I guess:
Join British historian Bettany Hughes as she examines a long-buried chapter of European history--the rise and fall of Islamic culture in what is now Spain and Portugal.
Although generations of Spanish rulers have tried to expunge this era from the historical record, recent archeology and scholarship now shed fresh light on the Moors who flourished in Al-Andalus for more than 700 years.
This fascinating documentary explodes old stereotypes and offers shocking new insights. You’ll discover the ingenious mathematics behind Granada’s dazzling Alhambra Palace, trace El Cid’s lineage to his Moorish roots, and learn how the Iberian population willingly converted to Islam in droves.
Through interviews with noted scholars, you’ll see how Moorish advances in mathematics, astronomy, art, and agriculture helped propel the West out of the Dark Ages and into the Renaissance. What emerges is a richly detailed portrait of a sensuous, inquisitive, and remarkably progressive Islamic culture in Christian Europe.
In addition I will repeat: during the dark ages in Europe much of Greek philosophy/ mathematics was lost following the sack of Rome and war throughout Europe - this knowledge was preserved in Arabic and eventually translated into Latin - much of this in Andeluthia
I've no axe to grind- I'm Uk English many generations - almost certainly Viking blood in the mix- have travelled somewhat in middle East and parts of Europe and the globe
Be open to new discoveries about our past- its fascinating

Philosophy[edit] Main article: Islamic Philosophy
Islamic architecture in Alhambra, Al-Andalus, in modern-day Spain Ibn Rushd and Ibn Sina played a major role in saving the works of Aristotle, whose ideas came to dominate the non-religious thought of the Christian and Muslim worlds. Ibn Sina and other philosophers such as al-Kindi and al-Farabi combined Aristotelianism and Neoplatonism with other ideas introduced through Islam.[citation needed] Arabic philosophic literature was translated into Latin and Ladino, contributing to the development of modern European philosophy. During this period, non-Muslims were allowed to flourish relative to treatment of religious minorities in the Christian Byzantine Empire. The Jewish philosopher Moses Maimonides, who lived in Andalusia, is an example.[citation needed]
Avicenna argued his "Floating Man" thought experiment concerning self-awareness, in which a man prevented of sense experience by being blindfolded and free falling would still be aware of his existence.[31]
In epistemology, Ibn Tufail wrote the novel Hayy ibn Yaqdhan and in response Ibn al-Nafis wrote the novel Theologus Autodidactus. Both were concerning autodidacticism as illuminated through the life of a feral child spontaneously generated in a cave on a desert island.
