A truly desperate claim from Cameron we would be at war if we were not in the EU?????????????????
Report TheBaron • May 9, 2016 2:13 PM BST
One of the main reasons for the formation of the EU was to prevent war between member states.  So to that extent it has been successful.
Report ebulGery • May 9, 2016 2:20 PM BST
True, but I cant see there would have a war anyway?

Exactly ebul but don't confuse Baron with logic.

Another daft move by the PM.
If Brexit could endanger peace, be the catalyst to WW III and cause global genocide - why did Dave say he'd campaign to leave if he didn't get his minor & almost worthless reforms?
Report Dr Crippen • May 9, 2016 4:04 PM BST
How soon people forget their history.
When the EU was formed Germany was split down the middle. With the Russians controlling the Eastern half and the other half in the West.

Germany haven't been in a position to arm themselves let alone wage war on anybody since WW2.
With NATO forces still on their soil at the present.
That's what's prevented Germany from making war not the EU.

Yet still they're making a complete mess of Europe, only without troops this time.
Report guinness2dear • May 9, 2016 4:09 PM BST
Good point, HH. Someone from exit (whoever) with half a bollock should pipe up and say Cameroon is a fecking loon suggesting war.

Report rogerthebutler • May 9, 2016 4:16 PM BST
This is barrel-scraping at it's most pathetic, extrapolating history to absolutely risible conclusions.

European peace is based on membership of NATO to the largest possible degree. Parliamentary democracies in mature Western Governments will not go to war with each other under any circumstances - other than if an unelected 'Big Government' runs roughshod over its citizens. Then you may get an alarmist, instable and knee-jerk reaction like say, the rise of the Far Right in Austria and France, which may lead to less-than-peaceful outcomes!

Peace since 1945 has largely been because Europe became sick of war.

We also have kept troops in Germany for 70 years Laugh after finishing the job properly unlike in WW1.

What Cameron is also astonishingly ignorant of is that a takeover of the UK by stealth has been underway for 40 years.

We've lost self determination. We have no border control to speak of. UK citizens have NO advantages living their own country!

We nearly lost our currency. We have embraced all our other cultures except ours.

Peace? Not for much longer old fruit.

A war in Europe may be a good thing. Not that i would fight in any such war for Britain.
Not under any circumstances, there are millions of people living in Britain who i do not like and have nothing in common with. Why would anyone born in this country feel any loyalty or any sense of duty towards it?

I thought this was a joke when I heard on the news when Cameron  said we risked a war by pulling out of the EU. What is he saying that we would declare war on the EU?
Because as far I can see it’s only Britain that is voting to leave the EU. Not that the creation of the EU as stopped conflict on European soil, or can Cameron not remember the 90s.
Also the record for longest period of peace in Europe is between the battle of Waterloo and the WW1 some 99 years a bit before the creation of the EU.
So in my estimation big Dave is either a liar or he is as thick as pig ****.

I think Cameron wants out of Europe. Probably reverse psychology is involved in his speeches.
Cameron and Jack straw both want to stay in? that's enough to get me to run in the other direction.

Its prosperity that has prevented wars. When the EU falls apart in a few years and German living standards collapse and they blame the Greeks Spanish and Portuguese we will see if we have become more civilized or not.
Report TheBaron • May 9, 2016 6:32 PM BST
The theory of the EU project is seen in terms of a permanent change with countries being economically and legally  tied so far less chance of war.  Same really applies world wide.  The time since WW2 is short in the history of European warfare.  NATO is just another alliance and history shows how easy they can fall apart therefore interdependancy was seen as a more reliable long term guarantee of peace.

And as for America being the guarantor of peace, well things also change there. Look at Trump's attitude to Europe looking after itself.
Report guinness2dear • May 9, 2016 6:46 PM BST

I do not think it is worth it.

I believe countries should maintain their own sovereignty. They have a right to their own governments, their own economic systems,
their own values.

As long as we do not attack each other, there would be peace.

Of course America itself has to keep to this, it appears to be the worst offender.

I agree with Trump. It means we no longer have to fight wars for America.

We can still have mutual treaties for defence and trade agreements.
