I own and have read the Lee Jones and harrington on online holdem, Aspro, along with several others.
If anyone wants to read the above books they are usually sold at amazon who have a good collection of poker books at cheap prices. |
|
By:
Lee Jones is the ideal start for beginners, wouldn't you agree annie?
|
|
By:
Well it is a long time since I have read it, Aspro, as I mainly play omaha poker now. However, I think it could be confusing for beginners because it mainly deals in limit holdem if I remember correctly. However, I have just looked at my copy and it is well used and I remember reading and rereading it. But it is a good book if you want to play limit holdem.

Good idea to have Poker posts on here although for the time being I'd leave Politics as a separate entity.
I prefer to play Razz now with a bit of Badugi thrown in although my profits are mainly from holdem on stars. |

What I got from it annie is the basics of poker that can be used in NL too, however; I'd almost given up on the game until I read it and it taught me things I hadn't considered before. I took this knowledge back into the game and never looked back. Maybe for absolute beginners you are right, but for those that have tried and hit that brick wall I thought it was an excellent book to finally climb over it.
Talking of Omaha I had a laugh in my very first game. It was a STT and I thought I'd sat at a NL game; when I was dealt 4 cards I didn't know what to do so, whilst playing, I was in the background looking up the rules. Sheer luck (of course) but I got to grips with the basics and went on to win it ![]() |

Actually, Aspro, it was like that with me with Lee Jones book. I was playing mainly no limit but as with you I found it very informative. There were not many good poker books out at that time.
It is something in reverse for me Aspro about no limit. I rarely play holdem nowadays but a little while ago I had qualified for a lucrative holdem freeroll that did not have too many players so I thought I would have a go. However I was all at sea for a while trying to remember plays etc! At one stage I was among the very good money, but it did not last. I think because I was so sure I would not last long that I was very aggressive which as you know pays off ![]() |

Is five card stud poker with the hole card face down and round betting following each card and then you can see your hole card after the fourth card has been bet on at all popular in the poker fraternity?
It's the game myself and my oldest poker buddy always return to when we meet up. |
|
By:
Never played it that way EO; I grew up on 5 & 7 Card Stud and Draw until I discovered Holdem but I've always seen the cards up-front. The only game I haven't seen the cards is Brag
|

By:
I should say 3-Card Brag

There is stud and draw tournies etc listed in pokerstars but I don't know enough to know whether they are the ones you are talking about.

One of my ex boyfriends a long time ago played nine card brag in the pub with his mates, I was dead jealous that he could do that and I couldn't. I have played live holdem poker but I did feel uncomfortable with being the only woman, although they were really nice to me.
|
|
By:
9 card brag is a good game and a clever game too. I often played it with a minimum pair to end; better game imo
|
|
By:
One of my favourite card games was Hearts; we played a different version to the one found on computers but it could be quite lucrative.
|
|
By:
I loved nine card brag, but I only sort of played it when I was with one of the ex boyfriends, I loved it more than he did!
I should have been born a man ![]() |

I've played quite a few card games that my father taught me, he was a gambler like me, that is where I got my love of horseracing and cards from. He taught me Newmarket, the card game, rummy, cribbage, etc. Although one of my favourite card games was kaluki which an ex boyfriend taught me. We used to play many happy hours playing it.

I must be a genius, crags, to remember all I have said about being a woman in nearly 8000 posts over ten years, the sucker is YOU. No one has ever picked up anything that points to me being a man.

Annie, you're not my sister are you? I could have written that passage myself about my Dad, although I'd change the horse-racing to dogs. Every Saturday night down Walthamstow, cards several times a week and eventually, at 18, joining him and his mates down the pub playing poker.

I hate to admit this but that wink was funny and came out-of-the-blue. My advice annie is to just ignore him if he's bugging you
|
|
By:
I do try to ignore him, Aspro, but when he calls posters who believe in me 'suckers' it makes me sad.
I have always said that it is not that he calls me a man, but makes posters think that I am a man taking the p1$$ out of them that I do not like. I noticed that you are a Spurs supporter like me and you went to Walthamstow dogs like me. Where did you live in London? I envy you being a man growing up with such a dad. Unfortunately being a woman in those days I had to depend on boyfriends to take me to the dogs etc. One boyfriend I had was mad on dogs like me so we went six days a week all around the London tracks. The other boyfriends I had to twist their arms to take me ![]() |

That last post annie was inviting a joke but I'll not make it.

I can assure you annie, we take no notice and see it as no more than banter, so don't let it bother you what he says to us. I'm originally from Walthamstow before moving to Chingford when I was 13. Dad took both me and my sister to the dogs from a very young age, we used to play in the children's playground, eat chips and drink coke while Dad went off with his mates (couldn't do that today). It was when I was around 12/13 that Dad said to me that I could spend some of my pocket money on a bet so, having read an earlier 'pop' magazine saying that my lucky number was 3, I chose 25p on the 3 dog and it only bloody won! That was my first ever bet and I became a gambler thereafter. Sometimes I wished it had lost ![]() |

I'm watching a good last frame of the session on the snooker, but this thread is also holding my attention and giving me a good laugh

Same here aspro. My old man used to take me to Belle Vue dogs and I'd be on the playground. I was a fair bit younger but like you say they were different days. Even then I used to get a ten pence free bet on a Saturday. Happy days. Wouldn't have changed them for the world.

Me either EO - Happy days indeed

Hi King, I don't play Betfair but I have the same problem on Paddy Power. Only solution is to keep playing.

Been playing $10/$20 dub ups tonight.
The amount of peep betting on the bubble when we have the small stack all-in is incredible. |

Must be ticket winners on reflection. Feckin 1diots and getting me raging.

Double ups.

Double or nothing sngs, aka?
I am so unused to the terminology because pokerstars do not have them anymore as a lot were cheating so they have fifty fifty, which is you get a certain amount then a share according to how many chips you have accumalated. But the same thing, half win and half do not. I play them on omaha but I don't like them, I prefer the old DoNs. I agree about how annoying it is when people don't understand the dynamics of the game. |
