There was an inquiry of some sort with the results released 3 or 4 years ago.  Don't know which inquiry it was, there seem to be loads of them.  I think the Sun headline the day after it was "Hillsborough:  The real truth"*  They went on to catalogue the findings from this investigation and how it wasn't the fault of the fans and the police had lied and covered up etc.  fk me even the coroner was in on the cover up. I don't know if they expressly apologised.  I'm not sticking up for them at all, it is toilet paper.  Even the star had it on its front page, fk me, they never have proper news on their front paper.

(*for those that don't know their infamous headline from back in the day was "Hillsborough: The truth, then they went on to slander Liverpool fans based on a pack of lies)

Former newspaper editor Kelvin MacKenzie claimed he “got caught up” in the Hillsborough cover-up.

Mr MacKenzie signed off on the The Sun’s shameful ‘The Truth’ front page in the wake of the 1989 disaster.

He ran a falsified story claiming some Liverpool fans urinated on police and had picked the pockets of the dead.

Those claims were found to be entirely without foundation and the end product of a smear campaign to shift blame onto victims....'

It is notable that the Sun - still boycotted by many people in Liverpool over its coverage in the immediate aftermath of the Hillsborough tragedy - keeps its coverage of the inquest verdict for pages eight and nine. Its front page story reveals that David Cameron is using WhatsApp to communicate his EU campaign plans.

The Daily Mail focuses on Labour MP Naz Shah's resignation from her position as an aide to the shadow chancellor, and her apology over Facebook posts about Israel that she shared before becoming an MP in 2014.

Another proud moment for The Sun was its 'Bonkers Bruno Locked Up' headline, indicating its progressive attitude to mental health.

Read today that McKenzie phoned Dalgleish at the time and asked him how he could repair the damage.
Dalgleish told him to print in big letters We Lied on the front page.
McKenzie said he couldn't do that so Dalgleish hung up on him and has refused to deal with him ever since.
