Thought I may aswell ask here, as a few of you seem to have done a fair amount of travelling.

Basically, I'm looking into going to the rugby league world cup in Australia in October 2017. Going westwards would seem to be the logical choice concerning time zones and the effects on the body.

I'm planning on making a few stopovers on the way, Vancouver or Los Angeles, then Hawaii and onto Oz. hopefully taking in the Melbourne cup aswell. I'm estimating about a 5 week trip in all, so can anyone give me some sound advice, the dos/ donts, flight prices, places to stay etc...Tia twonky.

I`ve done it twice. The second time, I felt I was due a holiday, but didn`t know where to go. So I kind of went everywhere, doing a city a day. Take in the main sights and then move on the next day. Best holiday I ever had, and the one I look back on more than any other holiday, with the most varied selection of memories.
Don`t know if you`ve looked into this much, yet, but there are a number of companies specialising in these tickets. Most have `bands`, with something like `up to six` stopovers, seven/eight stopovers` nine/ten` More stopovers are obviously more expensive but, bring down the average cost of each stopover. If going westward, there`s no going eastward, even only by a little bit. The tickets are usually valid for a year. Most often, you`re restricted to flights that are operated by member companies of one of the three or four major world alliances, such as One World (BA, American Airlines, Cathay, Japan Airlines inter alia) or Star Alliance (Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, SAA, Air Canada).
One of the best bits was actually before I left; using the Route Planner that the websites provide is great fun, I spent hours and hours choosing, then changing my mind numerous times, before booking.

Enjoy it!

^ good advice.

Have done it  few times.  The Route Planning online is indeed fun.  I prefer Star Alliance because then you can do the bulk of your travel on Singapore Airlines.  Upgrading to either Business or First on these type of tickets is excellent value.

Might be a question for Lisa Stansfield once she has sobered up.

Cross your fingers we stay in the EU or the trip is going to be about 50% dearer in terms of spending money :)

I've been to Hawaii twice and don't rate the place much. One stopover I would thoroughly recommend though is Raratonga, The Cook Islands, one of my favourite places I've ever been to.

I strongly suggest taking the 'adult entertainment' route via Thailand and Cambodia

I often go on holiday then wing it, if I was short of time like that I'd plan it much more in advance so you're not sitting around wasting holiday time planning stuff, you just go enjoy yourself as you know what you're going to do. Also you like lose an entire day each travel day, so I wouldn't go overboard with stops.

Also, when entering the US, make sure you tick the box that says you're a nazi war criminal from WW2.
It'll lead to an amusing time at the immigration desk Wink.

Disclaimer; the above is probably a very bad idea, I don't think they have my sense of "humor". Laugh

Yes, I made the cardinal error flying into New York of having the toe of my shoe on the yellow line rather than behind it whilst awaiting Passport Control. I'll not do that again!

Thanks for the replays lads...

Not to bothered about LA as I've been there a fair few times already. Vancouver and British Columbia are on my bucket list, but maybe a bit too chilly in October. Either place is only being used as a stop off point to Hawaii for a few days.

They must all be like that cooperman, I flew in there and I was tired and had made some innocent mistake on the form, missed a box or something, the amount of attitude I got was really unfriendly and unexpected.

Then the other side of those guys, I can't remember why I had to deal with the staff, they were as friendly as you like!
