Merkel has actually agreed to have her countryman prosecuted!!! Crazy
Report HH Sultan Vinegar April 15, 2016 2:02 PM BST
Under a section of Germany's criminal code, the government has to authorise prosecutors to pursue a case against the comedian, Jan Böhmermann, who is accused of insulting a foreign leader.

"There were different opinions between the coalition partners - the conservatives and the SPD (Social Democrats)," the German Chancellor Ms Merkel told reporters in Berlin.

"The outcome is that the German government will give the authorisation in the current case," she added, stressing that this was not a decision about the merits of the prosecution's case against Böhmermann.

However, the German leader also announced that the country would by 2018 scrap the rarely enforced section 103 of the criminal code - insulting representatives of foreign states - as a result of the embarrassing affair.

I knew comedy would come to a end in the next decade or 2 given that you are not allowed to offend certain parts of society., but this is ridiculous.

I knew that stupid woman was going to agree to this, all she and the EU have done for months now is bend over to every demand Turkey has made, just so she can return a few migrants who'll just try again anyway. It's shocking, that so shortly after "Je Suis Charlie" she's agreeing to the demands of this guy who is a religious nut fascist who is being attacked internationally for suppressing the media and dissent own country.

"Nein" should have been the answer.

You can say what you like about Cameron, he's in comparison the world's greatest leader compared to what that idiotic woman is doing to Germany and the EU. It's like she's bet her pension on the brexit campaign.

usual suspects sweating up and frothing at the mouth.

Germany has a silly law. The comedian knew it was a silly law and deliberately and blatantly flouted the law to invite prosecution. The comedian gets his wish.

If the Germans have any respect for free speech they will repeal the relevant law.

Erdogan what sweetheart he is, not the first time he has ran crying to the law when someone takes the p1ss out of him.
Funny thing is he tries to pass himself off as some kind of hard big man of Turkey? More like a Turkish Delight if you ask me, the big m1nge.

Has for that idiot Merkel is there no limit to her stupidity? Why didn’t she remind him that Germany has millions of Turks living there and if he dosn’t fook off being a tit she will send the ungrateful bastards back home.

"What I’m about to read is not allowed. If it were to be read in public, that would be forbidden in Germany."

Quote from the comedian.

Its like this. Germanys laws apply to Germany. They are based upon the assumption that its citizens are free. They don`t have to account for their behavior to anyone but themselves.

Their honor though is the limits they place on their actions. They have no place for King or Kaiser. This is why they can have the luxury of having such a law because they can be fairly happy it won`t be abused. They know they can say all manner of things against their own leader and others and nothing will become of it.
Say the most horrible things about the US president and you will not be alone, many thousands of Germans have done so...and many thousands of Americans have done so.

And that is the difference. So the question is why? The west must stop and tell less civilisied countries that no they cannot presume on our good nature.
Report dave1357 April 18, 2016 12:31 PM BST
They have a (silly) law in place that says it is a crime to insult other country's leaders.  Why they have that law I have no idea.

They should repeal the law, it has no place in modern civilisation.
Report lfc1971 April 18, 2016 12:37 PM BST
Perhaps it is not the law that is silly. Politeness is a delight, for civilised people.
There is not a single rule or regulation that does not have its charm...in a beautiful country like Germany.
Report lfc1971 April 18, 2016 12:47 PM BST
you see its a bit of a cheek for Erdogan to expect Germany to uphold the law. It might be a worthwhile lesson to tell him we will keep the law in place, but ignore it on this occasion.
Report treetop April 18, 2016 12:54 PM BST
Conceit is of primary concern to a tyrant, perhaps Erdogan should look at himself more closely and the EU should look at him more closely than it has been doing.
