and 23% support the introduction of Sharia law in Britain.

Lots of crap on the radio today about our need to be understanding and sympathetic to their beliefs.

If I went to a Muslim country and protested about Sharia law, female genital mutilation, stoning people in the streets, etc, would I be right in thinking they would be keen to take my views into account and put in place integration plans to help me feel more welcome?

Before the advent of  racing tv and the internet, I used to frequent a local bookmakers.  One of the regulars there was an intelligent young man who often spoke to me.  We ended up having frequent conversations about horseracing and I thought he was very nice. He had been born here and  apart from having dark hair  you would think he was british.

However one of our conversations turned to the fact he was a muslim.  At that time there was no troubles to speak of.  But in one of our conversations I mentioned about the stoning of women who had committed adultery and to my horror he just CASUALLY said he agreed with it.  He actually said that if his mother had committed adultery then she should be stoned to death.  I did not speak to him again.

Of course I forgot to mention, why was he in a bookmakers when as a muslim he should not gamble?

It's a difficult one annie. We always see ourselves as the enlightened ones but not too far in our own past women were very much second class citizens. We may not still drown witches but within living memory one was convicted in this country. People who we otherwise see as reasonably normal hold some very strange views. In his culture such views are perfectly normal. A lot of my own friends growing up were Muslims and they were generally decent lads but their views on English girls was outrageously uncomplimentary. Of course it was born out of these girls being willing to proffer sexual favours. The boys never for one minute considered their own hypocrisy. It was different for them.

ET, might I be so bold as to suggest that your  posts would benefit from some paragraphs?

Your posts are better than mine, ET, but they would be even better with them.

If people believe homosexuality is wrong thy have every right...it says it is wrong in the Bible.

My objection is to gay marriage only.

You may be so bold annie. I always use paragraphs especially on longer posts but my paragraphs, somewhat like myself, tend towards verbosity and meandering.

All of the crazy views stem from religion - whatever religion that it.
Religion is the root of evil and whoever believes in imaginary friends in the sky etc. etc. need to sort themselves out - ooh my imaginary friend is better than your imaginary friend so Im going to sort you out .. mugs the lot of them

Religion is the root of evil

How can peoples opinion be the root of the evil?????
People were asked what they think and they gave their opinion.
If gays cannot even cope with people questioning them, then they are not a lot better than a religion themselves.

Homosexuality was illegal in this country until 1961, some of us think this was a better time. At least is kept gays head down if nothing else.
I would never enquire what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own bedrooms myself.....they would do it anyway.

A civilised democratic society should allow people to have any opinion they want. As long as they don't use it to harm others.

Media is our religion, I don't see the need to agree with everything I am told, I don't.

I think Muslim's views on homosexuality would receive a more than sympathetic welcome from a majority of chit-chatters.

Which is why the whole right-wing, Britain First w1lly-waving response to the latest Muslim-inspired outrage (of which there is plenty) makes me laugh.

You've got to be a soldier for liberal (small 'l') values in response to extremism IMO.

That's rather sweeping Roger. Some chit chatters, certainly, many possibly, but the majority? I don't think so personally. I give the majority more credit than that.

I don't think homosexuality is wrong myselfShocked

Because I don't believe there is such a thing as heterosexuality or homosexuality at all.....I believe we are all bisexual.

However the vast majority will choose heterosexuality and stick to it but not all.

The reason I believe it, is because bi-sexuals completely contradict everything don't they.

We cant have three types of sex here, this is just too complicated, it is not elegant, so it is not true.

Marriage is a very traditional heterosexual tradition and sensibly we should stick to that. Civil Union is enough for Gays.

It's a great example of how the left have misunderstood Islam.

We know that there are passages in Leviticus (18 and 20) which are not dissimilar to the Quran (7:80-84).

Now, by and large, most modern forms of Christianity have accepted that the bible is not the literal word of God, and that God's message is open to interpretation. But the point is this, because the holy book in Christianity is an account of important events in the religion written by man, a certain degree of revisionism is possible. That's not to say that it's not historically been met with fierce resistance, but the faith and its tenets, can still remain in tact after a fair amount of revisionism.

NOT SO ISLAM. and this is what is being ignored. it is the word of god. Allah spoke to Muhammad and Muhammad wrote it down word for word. According to Islam, the Quran would have been identical if Allah had revealed himself to the prophet in 2016 or 610. (the hadiths would have been different of course). You cannot revise it and leave the religion in tact. (and this is the whole beef about the Satanic verses, because it implies that Muhammad did some sneaky editing on the sly).

of course on top of this, we've got the inability of many to extend Popper's paradox of tolerance beyond one frame. Some people opposed to Islam are merely intolerant of Islam's intolerance (this is how it should be, if you tolerate intolerance, your tolerance merely promotes intolerance), but intolerance of the intolerance of intolerance (i.e. being intolerant of people intolerant to islam's intolerance) is in fact tolerance of intolerance, which as Popper rightly suggests, leads to intolerance.

That last paragraph is quite tricky DStyle???????????????????

I think opposition to homosexuality is a little wider than Islam is it not????????????????????

One other problem I have with Gays, is how through the Media, they are depicting anyone who questions them as a bad person.

This is not true, people have different opinions on this that is all.

I have never harmed a homosexual and never would, and neither do I expect other people to, but I maintain people have

a right to their own opinion without being depicted as a bad person!

The best thing is to use common sense, otherwise we are in danger of disappearing up our own sphincter.

I am easy with Islam, but only as a principle. I do not think we can lives literally by what somebody wrote in 600 AD.

I would say punishing anybody for being homosexual is wrong, and this includes Islam.

But people can always say if they think it is wrong...I have a belief in free speech

The tricky one here is gay behaviour, what is reasonable what is unreasonable????????????????????????????????????

So the best thing is just to go by the values of whatever society one lives in, it seems common sense, and I believe

societies can have their own values within reason, although that in itself is tricky.

Agreed

I don't think homosexuality itself is wrong at all. There's little enough love in the world and if you can find some, go for it and I really don't care where you stick it as long as it works.

However, if you commit acts of obscenity in public. If you claim special dispensation from society because 'it's part of gay culture' then, um, you can fk right off.
