Lots of talk about the time it could take to negotiate a trade deal with the EU.
Do we need one?
I am of the opinion that we don’t take a look at VW, Ford , Daimler, Benz , Peugeot ,Renault etc.
They all have a big slice of the UK car market if tariffs come into force these companies will be left with two options, they can either walk away and lose most of their market share or they will need to build factories over here. Same goes for lots of other EU companies. Not all doom and gloom

it is if you want the best, macarony. I drive a Mercedes.
Report Burton-Brewers • April 3, 2016 3:30 PM BST
as many knowledgeable political commentators have stated, should we actually vote to leave then the next day the chairmen of VW, BMW, Mercedes etc will be in Merkel's office insisting nothing is done to jeopardize their exports to the UK.
Report unitedbiscuits • April 3, 2016 3:37 PM BST
If you drive a German car, you still can after Brexit, but it will cost you more.
Report Ibrahima Sonko • April 3, 2016 3:43 PM BST
Maybe brits will buy cars made in the uk.
Report brendanuk1 • April 3, 2016 3:45 PM BST

I'd be very interested to hear why it will cost more
Report Ibrahima Sonko • April 3, 2016 4:04 PM BST
It wont, just people making things up.

a) A free-trade agreement means exactly that, but only for businesses based within that area. To turn our backs on the EU means to turn our backs on that principle.
b) Sterling would plummet after Brexit, making an imported car more expensive. And an Apple phone, for that matter.
Report Burton-Brewers • April 3, 2016 4:30 PM BST
I see you just phrased it wrong, what you meant to put was it might will cost you more
Report Burton-Brewers • April 3, 2016 4:31 PM BST
rather should I say it might cost you more
Report Ibrahima Sonko • April 3, 2016 4:45 PM BST
I doubt big car manufacturers will allow price increases on their products which may cause less sales.
Report unitedbiscuits • April 3, 2016 4:46 PM BST
Do you want a third go, Burton-Brewers? With some kind of rebuttal of points a) or b),
Report mobo • April 3, 2016 4:52 PM BST
biscuits - how do you know???  and does it matter anyway -clearly you must drive one of these gas guzzlers
Report Burton-Brewers • April 3, 2016 4:52 PM BST
no I will be the first to congratulate you when you clean up on the currency markets after the collapse of sterling. With your lay bet on a Brexit also you will be able to retire comfortably to Germany.

as many knowledgeable political commentators have stated
cant be that knowledgeable otherwise they would have known the free trade deal with the US will by far over compensate for tarrifs we have to impose.

the free trade deal with the US will by far over compensate for tariffs we have to impose.
Here's how that works:
Glaxo fined $3 billion in US courts

Facebook pay £4,237 in corporation tax

Trade agreements are a power game, there are no equal partners. Donald Trump has so much as said that his administration would run foreign-policy like a protection racket. Forget the "special relationship." America has one special relationship; it's with Israel.

lets talk about the vat system on imports and exports.Laugh

how the politicians missed that one is beyond me.

What free trade deal with the USA?  That's not happening in the next ever.

Report dave1357 • April 3, 2016 6:42 PM BST
The deal that will be offered is free trade on manufacturing and food gtf with your UK financial services.

Because anyone with any sense will have left the government, the remaining shower of fannies like ids grayling and boris will sign up to it.

the eu is in negotiations with the US re a free trade deal.

we are voting to leave the eu so yes your right...we wont see this deal Laugh

picture this.

a firm exports to a country in the eu.

we have come out of the eu and opted to go alone.
we have no trade deals set up with that country and are waiting for a lot fo deals to get done.

the firm exports goods.
arrives at customs.

what happens next?
Report dave1357 • April 5, 2016 4:21 PM BST
the default is wto agreements which have various tariffs that they will be applied on trade between the uk and all eu countries.
Report Hamsterdam • April 5, 2016 6:52 PM BST
It means it'll have to go through customs and incur a shiit load of duty and tax plus lots of paperwork required.

At the moment in the EU you can send something (whether it be a car or a cake) as if you were posting to your neighbour using Royal Mail.

Free trader basically means there are no postal boarders.

Send/receive stuff outside of the EU and you'll know what a pain it can be.

did you mean people on Ebay or does that include JCB, Bentley, Nissan, Jaguar, Rolls Royce, Boots, Toyota, Glaxo etc?
Report G1_Jockey_4 • April 5, 2016 8:26 PM BST
its not just administrative problems which may delay goods.
companies may shy away from having to pay vat+tarrifs at point of customs.
vat paid early means some will have cashflow issues.

same in the uk
to say it wont affect small businesses is not a well thought out argument.

tahts befoe any tarrifs have been added to the goods and shipping costs.

they have to pay the vat at customs lol

gonna cause more delays

suppose it will mean the government will have to employ more people

it will be a pain for those.
some will have to decide also whether its worth staying in the uk...if they sell more on the continent they may as well move.
Report Ibrahima Sonko • April 5, 2016 8:39 PM BST
Land Rover are really struggling to sell to the usa even with the tariffs, you make something someone wants then it will be bought. Not sure how a delay will occur, you make out when you buy something from a shop you have to suffer a delay while they add on the vat. Crazy
Report G1_Jockey_4 • April 5, 2016 8:49 PM BST
a day or two for a land rover wont be an issue.

but it could be an issue for some smaller firms.

also cash flow will be an issue for small firms.
yet we constantly hear "small firms will benefit".

so much sh1t is spouted from so called knowledgeable people who are trying to influence people.
Report Burton-Brewers • April 5, 2016 8:55 PM BST
no the States is not a prime market for Jaguar/Landrover Ibrahim, they struggle as it is keeping up with the demand from China
Report Ibrahima Sonko • April 5, 2016 9:02 PM BST

And my driveway.

My brother runs his own small firm that doesnt get paid by big firms in the uk for up 6 months sometimes, a few days Crazy

A leave vote means nothing changes for 2 years anyway.
In that time the PM and his team will negotiate a free trade and free movement deal with the EU ( like Iceland, Norway and Switzerland )
The reason they will do this is to preserve economic stability. They are not idiots. Although the next PM might be.

The cost of the Norway deal if adjusted for comparative GDP will be about £2.5bn net contribution, a saving of about £6.5bn on our current net contribution or about 1 day's GDP. The equivalent of an extra day off a year is a result imv.

Oh, Norway, Switzerland and Iceland are three of the four happiest countries in the world apparently. The exception in the top 4 is Denmark which is a member but which has a higher number of opt outs than the UK.
Report Ibrahima Sonko • April 5, 2016 9:36 PM BST
People are too worried about the economy, a happy nation all pulling in the same direction will make more difference than any tariffs in the long term.

Who says after we leave the eu we can subsidise the oil/gas/steel and make them competitive because at the moment they are all history.

Hopefully if we quit the eu we can make foreign companies pay tax on uk profits and not move it away from uk tax, also if the uk leave the eu a few will follow imo.
Report unitedbiscuits • April 6, 2016 8:45 AM BST

Wishful thinking, Ibrahima. The European commission is pushing for deeper coordination of corporate tax, but faces fierce opposition from countries including the UK and Ireland.

People are too worried about the economy

and so they should be.
we escaped relatively well form subprime compared to most of the eu.

germany did ok but then they dont sh1t on their workers...andthey fought to protect jobs when the eu came knocking to do monopolize the postal services...wonder how many gained from that are now wishing to be out of the eu?
Report G1_Jockey_4 • April 6, 2016 9:23 PM BST
continuing on from subprime....our economy has been propped up by cheap labour and that helped us through post subprime.

take away that cheap labour and we will get the post subprime situation most of the eu got.
Report Paddy Hair • April 7, 2016 2:13 AM BST
I thought the cheap labour that was already here were allowed to stay and it was only new immigration that was stopped, those already here could stay.
