The National Association of Funeral Directors have apparently agreed to make coffins available in a wider range of colours and also to facilitate messages being inscribed on the sides -this could be in the form of symbols ,slogans or advertisements. Spokesman Steven Blackston said that requests were constantly received from relatives to have the coffin reflect the personality or the last wishes of the deceased. One customer with a quirky sense of humour had wanted a rhyme written on the coffin which went ' A tisket ,a tasket ,I'm happy in my casket'! Responding to criticisms that this would represent a loss of dignity or decorum, the NAFD states that modern life was much more open to funeral customs that differed from the traditional more restrictive model and people who were paying for a service should expect to have their wishes accommodated within reason. Many will recoil from this in horror but I think there's nothing amiss with someone being able to choose their valedictory message as they pass over to'the other side' . At the very least it could emphasise the fun in fun-eral. I haven't given it much thought but my own choice might be a sky blue coffin with tasteful Latin inscriptions on the sides -possibly from Lucretius or Marcus Aurelius. Mourners (should there be any) could spend the service trying to Google the meaning.
