I think you're failing to appreciative how he is deliberately subverting the genre...or some such pretentious pony.
Hes always careful to let you know that he can tell joke if he wants to but he would be really bored doing that. The problem is though regardless of what he does he's just not funny. |

Its the part of the equation that he misses most of all. You can deconstruct it all you like and then suggest its on purpose he plays to such small crowds but the reality is its because its just not funny |
