From the comments section which sums it up well.

Great days looking back. Cliff a motivational presenter who made generations of kids turn onto sciences along with another presenter James Burke. How different the shambolic BBC is today compared to those days. At 96 years of age cliff had a fair suck of the sauce bottle but he will be missed. RIP and thoughts with your next of kin and loved ones !

Introduced the UK to the LA sound by featuring The Castle by Love as the theme music of Holiday.

RIP

Spooky that he was on the other side of the mic on David Bowie's first TV interview (I believe)

I thought he was dead years ago. If I remember correctly he was married to Jean Metcalfe.

He is now. Sad

Great communicator with authority and humour. Feel sad I never sent him a card to say how much I appreciated his work while he was still alive.

I'll have to get my pencil case out and start sending a few cards out quick...

My mum's brilliant yorkshire pudding, roast beef and all the trimmings with 2 way family favourites in the background. Happy memories.

This from the Daily mail today..
The Tonight programme was an instant national institution at a time when ITV was in its infancy. At its peak it had an audience of 20 million and its frontman Cliff Michelmore was the most recognisable face in the land.

Who employs these writers when they can't even get the right TV Station he was on?

Good grief, that's a shocker.

The theme tune to "Tonight", which I'd forgotten but instantly recognised.

He was good. Personable, authoritative, relaxed.  Very little of the ego of recent/current presenters.  Mind you, he only had to contend with one other TV channel mostly.  Respect.  Another part of my past consigned to the grave.

Can't be much of your past left, bodil.Wink

Nothing is ever lost. People may be consigned to their graves, and landscapes be erased, but everything and everyone lives on as part of what you are now imo.

What am I now that I was then?
May memory restore again and again
The smallest color of the smallest day:
Time is the school in which we learn,
Time is the fire in which we burn.

R.I.P. Mr Michelmore.

One of my fathers favourite broadcasters who he always remembered from Aberfan and his on scene heartbreaking reports...

They are not long, the days of wine and roses,
Out of a misty dream
Our path emerges for a while, then closes
Within a dream.

We've both posted lines from poets killed by alcohol.

Seem to recall Dowson had accelerated decrepitude - like JF Sebastian in Blade Runner.  Might have been a paedophile also - though if you have 'acdep' then time is compressed.  Hey, but some gems.

As for me, I have no problem with alcohol - it goes down real easily. Or should that be really easy?

One of the greatest driving songs.  He is underrated - probably suspected of fascism.  He'll be a hero - eventually and wrongly.

We all have to avoid the road to hell ...
