Go figure, I'm expecting a dawn raid any day for the damage I must have done over the years then.

Weather woman on BBC just said ducks should be given fruit, lettuce or carrot as its stuff they usually eat.

How the hell does a duck eat a carrot in nature then?

It's got to get it out the ground break it up and 'chew?' All with just wings no teeth and only a bill.

How the hell do ducks eat white sliced bread in nature ?

You shouldn't feed any birds bread. This has been known for decades. Hardly news.
It swells up inside them , creating a feeling of fullness, whilst giving them zero nutrition.

Don't feed bread to birds, instead buy processed bags of wild bird food which is even harder for them to digest but makes the manufacturers a good living.

No wonder they tell us bread is bad for them.
Report Dr Crippen • March 14, 2016 10:57 AM GMT
It's got to be the manufacturers of food for wild stock who put these stories about.

Bread off the menu for animals birds perhaps due to all the s hite that's in it now.
while human consumption won't get questioned they'll just think up a new traffic light scheme to placate the food industry instead of telling them to stop pouring salt and or sugar into the mix.

The argument wasn't actually specifically about bread per se.
It was really about bread in water that doesn't get eaten attracks all sorts of bacteria that thrive on the added nutrients and become poisonous to any bird that then attempts to eat it.

On an additional note they said bread is like fast food and makes birds' arses big Devil

You shouldn't feed bread to ducks anymore

Can't they eat cake?
Report Dr Crippen • March 14, 2016 2:59 PM GMT
Why not simply let they starve?
Report kenny mann • March 14, 2016 3:52 PM GMT
Porridge oats, seeds, rice and defrosted frozen peas is what a mate feeds them. He says the oats are particularly well received.

How does the words of the song go :-

All the world seems in tune on a spring afternoon
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park
Every Sunday you'll see my sweetheart and me
As we poison the pigeons in the park

When they see us coming
The birdies all try and hide
But they still go for peanuts
When coated with cyanide

The sun's shining bright
Everything seems all right
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park

I was told not to feed the birds.
The advice was given over Christmas when it was freezing and no food to be found.
Let birds decide.  When there is good food to be found in nature they will eat that.
Report akabula • March 14, 2016 5:04 PM GMT
Putting bread out especially at nesting time doesn't do the birds any good.
I put out the bought stuff from the garden centre in the winter but nothing thereafter although I don't mind them raiding my garden for berries and seeds from flowers.
Strip my Red Hot Pokers (no jokes please) every year.

Report dustybin • March 14, 2016 5:18 PM GMT
Think I accidentally killed all the small birds in the vicinity because some time ago one of the bird feeders went missing, a squirrel stole it and I found it in another part of the garden abot 3 months later.
So I filled it again and put it back.
Strangely all the small birds have vanished over this winter as both feeders were barely touched and I had to throw one away as all the seeds sprouted

I subsequently learned that you are meant to wash em periodically.
Im wondering if they got poisoned?

Seems overkill to have to wash the feeders since nature isnt washed is it?
Report dustybin • March 14, 2016 5:22 PM GMT
I also put blueberries out as coming home from shopping one of the packets burst open in the boot with my crazy driving so I put em out on the bird bath thing
Took em about 2 weeks to go maybe longer and even the fatty wood pigeons wouldnt take em for a while and those fat fooks eat owt

Why do you think they have a BILL

Report kincsem • March 14, 2016 7:08 PM GMT
I once put out chopped banana.  It was a bit over-ripe.  Gone within the hour.
I understand birds do not find bananas in the wild in these islands.
Also told not to put out food during breeding season as the birds would feed it to the chicks and choke them and the bird population would be killed off.
Not true.  The birds will feed insects and caterpillars to the chicks and if they need some for themselves after a hard day's foraging they will use the feeders.

How on earth is anyone supposed to throw carrots, bananas etc to the ducks on a pond....would it not sink????

I feed them fresh wholemeal bread which is seeded...it may not benefit them that much but I am sure it fills a hole

not everything we eat is good for us
