Seems she's omly been taking it for 10 years because someone in the family had diabetes. She was doing well until she came out with that one.

The substance in question may have increased her endurance but that's about it. Plenty of sportstars, especially cricketers take Red Bull to achieve the same affect.
The chances of it determining whther she won a particular game, set, match let alone a title would be pretty slim. It's not like a 100m runner seeking to gain a hundredth of a second to win gold. It's a non story. |

The big corporations like Nike are not stupid, they soon ditched her very quick !
A Medical expert said this drug is intended for strokes and chronic heart conditions. And a normal course of treatment would be 4 to 6 wks, NOT 10 YEARS. So hardly a non story. "She seemed particularly upset by the state of the carpet in the downtown hotel where she spilled the beans" A very good stage-managed performance, but the joke about the carpet a terrible misjudgement to make light of the situation. Seems her best hope now to avoid a 4 year ban or worse, she needs to provide medical evidence that she has a condition that required a 10-year prescription of this treatment ! |

The decision to add meldonium to the banned list was approved on 16 September 2015, and it came into effect on 1 January 2016. Wada had spent the previous year monitoring the drug before adding it to the banned list.
It increases blood flow, which improves exercise capacity in athletes. ...The Guardian. She was daft to keep taking it after 1 Jan this year. Hardly worth a long ban though, given its legality for so many years. (It probably makes little difference and the placebo affect could well be worth more to the athlete). |

Nothing less than a 2 year ban. The substance is on the banned list. End of.
Athletes like Sharapova do not get their prescription drugs from the local chemist. They get them from manufacturers who guarantee that whatever the product it will not be contaminated with anything else on the proscribed list. Operation Puerto implicated cyclists, footballers, tennis players, and other athletes but only the cyclists paid the penalty. |
|
By:
so its more if its on banned list than if it improves performance?
its all fine taking whatever drugs you can for years gaining advantage, but if you test positive 1 day after its added to banned list she is guilty? shirley she has been guilty of using performance enhancing drugs for 10 years |

A quick Wikipedia search shows other banned atheletes are distance runners, biathlon etc
Should face a very long ban. Can't belive anyone's defending her. It's like a legal high just being legal due to a technical then being made illegal because of a law change. Unimaginable she's still taking it after the rule changes considering the huge team she'll have around her. |
|
By:
It is totally whether or not it's on the banned list otherwise where you draw the line. Caffeine will improve performance but should it be on the list? Strangely it used to be but not now.
Tramadol is the drug of choice for many endurance athletes now but not currently on the list. But not for long you'll find. |

Also known as maximising your performance within legal limits. Would be weird if you couldn't do that!

in interests of transparency you would think athletics would post their results, if they dont they you would have to assume they are 'at it'

... and Mo Farah's got nothing left in the tank as the 19 stone professional gambler cruises past him as they enter the stadium at the end of this marathon, still supping from his pint and munching the kebab he picked at the takeaway on 24 miles. He'll add this gold to the ones he's already picked up in the 100 metres, the triple jump, the pole vault, the synchronised swimming, the archery and the dressage... and he only started training last week. ![]() |

'No players are speaking out for her because she has no friends in the game': Tennis stars line up to slam Maria Sharapova over failed her drug test Player Chris Evert claimed yesterday that no one is stepping up to support Sharapova because she has no friends in the game Petra Kvitova said 'I hope it will not affect the tennis world. I hope that the fans will still like tennis' Andy Murray criticized his own racket company for promising to extend its sponsorship of Maria Sharapova, despite her positive test in Australia By ALEXANDRA KLAUSNER FOR DAILYMAIL.COM and ASSOCIATED PRESS PUBLISHED: 02:13, 10 March 2016 | UPDATED: 05:22, 11 March 2016 Several tennis stars are expressing their anger over Maria Sharapova's positive drug test and very few are offering words of support. Player Chris Evert claimed yesterday that no one is stepping up to support Sharapova because she has no friends in the game. 'It’s hard to tell (the reaction from players) because Maria Sharapova has always isolated herself from the rest of the tennis world, from the players. She doesn’t have a lot of close friendships on the tour,' she told ESPN. |
