Maria Sharapova loses $70m Nike endorsement deal and TAG Heuer contract after the tennis star admits having taken performance enhancing drug for TEN YEARS

Former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova tested positive for Meldonium after competing in Australian Open

Meldonium was a medicine the Russian ace took for 10 years but it became a prohibited substance on January 1

Received letter on December 22 from WADA informing her of changes and she admits she didn't look at the list

Added because WADA said there 'evidence of its use by athletes with the intention of enhancing performance'

Sharapova said she was taking the medicine for 'health issues' including a family history of diabetes

International Tennis Federation confirms she will be provisionally suspended from the sport from March 12

Hours later, she lost her most lucrative deal when Nike announced it has suspended their relationship

On Tuesday morning Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer said its deal with Sharapova will not be renewed.

However, Russia's tennis chief says he expects Sharapova to play at the 2016 Olympics in August

I am very concerned that so many of our world class sports-people suffer, in silence, from medical conditions which necessitate the long-time consumption of medication that is borderline performance enhancing.

One has to feel sorry for the poor mites who are braving what must be such debilitating ailments in order to perform for our enjoyment... Just as well their personal physicians have the essential (currently not illegal) pharmaceuticals at hand to keep them fit. Shame Sharapova's somehow crossed the line over to the blacklistMischief

If these sponsorship companies are so concerned with the moral high ground they should start drug testing their own athletes
Report maleuk01. • March 8, 2016 6:35 PM GMT
Surely you have to make an exception for the best looking tennis player out there. She probably doubles the viewing figures for woman's tennis.

Realistically she had been taking this medication for years prescribed by her family doctor. Was only banned in January this year. Hardly worth stringing her up for. Yes she made an error and didn't check/read e mail informing her. A 6 month ban and fine seems suffice.

All those wanting to string her up is a bit of an over reaction. Taking titles of her for taking a drug prescribed by a doctor and not in the banned list is just plain stupidity.
Report Ibrahima Sonko • March 8, 2016 6:40 PM GMT
Maria Sharapova has revealed she failed a drug test for meldonium at January's Australian Open.

Here, Press Association Sport takes a look at the substance involved.

:: Meldonium is also known as Mildronate, the name by which Sharapova knew the drug having taken it since 2006.

:: It is commonly used to treat angina, other heart problems and diabetes. Sharapova referred to a family history of diabetes during her announcement.

:: Meldonium was only added to the World Anti-Doping Agency's banned list from the start of 2016. However, it had been on the organisation's monitoring programme throughout 2015.

:: A WADA spokesman wrote on Twitter on Monday that: "Meldonium was added to Prohibited List because of evidence of its use by athletes with the intention of enhancing performance." Studies have indicated the drug can increase an individual's capacity for physical exertion.

:: The drug is manufactured by Latvian company Grindeks and widely exported to Sharapova's homeland of Russia and several neighbouring countries. However, it is not approved for use in the United States, where the tennis player has her base.

:: Sharapova was the second Russian sportswoman to announce a positive test for meldonium on Monday. Figure skater Ekaterina Bobrova confirmed to Russian agency R-Sport that she had tested positive at January's European Championships, and was ruled out of the World Championships as a result.

To be fair she might well lose more in the way of product endorsement contracts for this "oversight" than the entire annual budget of WADA.

Maybe she should of funded a better personal performance enhancing drug supplier who might have spent some time ensuring that what she was loading up with hadn't yet been banned.

Maria Sharapova has spent the past decade-plus cultivating her brand.
She was a winner on and off the court.
She was smart, attractive, personable and a dominant athlete. Her goal was to build the candy company she started, Sugarpova, into a lifestyle brand, which lived long after her playing days were done.
Sharapova, her sponsors and her team at IMG built a compelling narrative that helped Sharapova earn $285 million during her career and cement her as the world’s highest-paid female athlete for 11 years running.

The substance in question may have increased her endurance but that's about it. Plenty of sportstars, especially cricketers take Red Bull to achieve the same affect.

The chances of it determining whther she won a particular game, set, match let alone a title would be pretty slim.

It's not like a 100m runner seeking to gain a hundredth of a second to win gold.

It's a non story.

The big corporations like Nike are not stupid, they soon ditched her very quick !

A Medical expert said this drug is intended for strokes and chronic heart conditions. And a normal course of treatment would be 4 to 6 wks, NOT 10 YEARS.  So hardly a non story.

"She seemed particularly upset by the state  of the carpet in the downtown hotel where she spilled the beans"

A very good stage-managed performance, but the joke about the carpet a terrible misjudgement to make light of the situation.

Seems her best hope now to avoid a 4 year ban or worse, she needs to provide medical evidence that she has a condition that required a 10-year prescription of this treatment !

The decision to add meldonium to the banned list was approved on 16 September 2015, and it came into effect on 1 January 2016. Wada had spent the previous year monitoring the drug before adding it to the banned list.

It increases blood flow, which improves exercise capacity in athletes.

...The Guardian.

She was daft to keep taking it after 1 Jan this year.

Hardly worth a long ban though, given its legality for so many years. (It probably makes little difference and the placebo affect could well be worth more to the athlete).
Report bix • March 10, 2016 1:54 PM GMT
Nothing less than a 2 year ban. The substance is on the banned list.   End of.
Athletes like Sharapova do not get their prescription drugs from the local chemist. They get them from manufacturers who guarantee that whatever the product it will not be contaminated with anything else on the proscribed list.
Operation Puerto implicated cyclists, footballers, tennis players, and other athletes but only the cyclists paid the penalty.
Report brendanuk1 • March 10, 2016 2:08 PM GMT
so its more if its on banned  list than if it improves performance?

its all fine taking whatever drugs you can for years gaining advantage, but if you test positive 1 day after its added to banned list she is guilty?

shirley she has been guilty of using performance enhancing drugs for 10 years
Report Zazu • March 10, 2016 2:15 PM GMT
A quick Wikipedia search shows other banned atheletes are distance runners, biathlon etc

Should face a very long ban. Can't belive anyone's defending her. It's like a legal high just being legal due to a technical then being made illegal because of a law change. Unimaginable she's still taking it after the rule changes considering the huge team she'll have around her.
Report bix • March 10, 2016 2:22 PM GMT
It is totally whether or not it's on the banned list otherwise where you draw the line. Caffeine will improve performance but should it be on the list? Strangely it used to be but not now.
Tramadol is the drug of choice for many endurance athletes now but not currently on the list. But not for long you'll find.

Petra Kvitova said 'I hope it will not affect the tennis world. I hope that the fans will still like tennis'

Andy Murray criticized his own racket company for promising to extend its sponsorship of Maria Sharapova, despite her positive test in Australia

Several tennis stars are expressing their anger over Maria Sharapova's positive drug test and very few are offering words of support.

Player Chris Evert claimed yesterday that no one is stepping up to support Sharapova because she has no friends in the game.

'It’s hard to tell (the reaction from players) because Maria Sharapova has always isolated herself from the rest of the tennis world, from the players. She doesn’t have a lot of close friendships on the tour,' she told ESPN.
