If I throw a coin three times, the chances of hitting HEAD HEAD HEAD is 1 in 8.

What are the chances of HEAD HEAD HEAD if I throw them all together

The same?
Report Just Checking • March 3, 2016 8:18 PM GMT
Assuming 3 identical idealised coins, the same.

Do you have to spin them ....if so you will need 3 hands !

I know that if I back three 1/1 horses to win three races at the same time one always loses.Sad

The possibilities are:

HHH

TTT

HTT

HHT

Which makes it 1 in 4.

How can "a coin" become "them"?

WTF r u schmokin', Bruv???

The dude only has one coin.

Are you Money Tree in disguise, or summat?

Report Just Checking • March 8, 2016 7:27 PM GMT
It's one in 8. Probability 1/2*1/2*1/2.
Report lmfao • March 10, 2016 2:57 PM GMT
you are all wrong:

statistically one of the unlikeliest things which have happened was when a professor was lecturing on probability and was tossing a coin - asking for calls of heads or tails: the coin landed - and balanced - on its side- to the astonishment of all.

FFS!

Good question though... I too initially assumed it to be 1 in 8.

I would happily pay you 4-1 every time HHH came up if you would pay me 3-1 every time the result was one head and two tails

Report Ozymandius • March 10, 2016 6:21 PM GMT
But there are only 4 possible outcomes...or am I losing my marbles?
Report kincsem • March 10, 2016 6:47 PM GMT
hhh, hht, htt, hth, ttt, tth, thh, tht.
hth
Report Ozymandius • March 10, 2016 6:53 PM GMT
but hht is the same outcome as hth?  isnt it? 2 heads and a tail.
Report blackbarn • March 10, 2016 6:54 PM GMT
The probability of outcome HHH is one in four.  The probability of sequence HHH is one in eight.   I thinkWink
Report Ozymandius • March 10, 2016 6:56 PM GMT
yeah,  think you have nailed it....distinction between 'outcome' and 'sequence'.
Report Just Checking • March 10, 2016 7:20 PM GMT
It's 1 in 8, FFS, coin tossing is the most basic example you'll do day one if you ever look into probability!

Its' the probability of the first toss (0.5) being correct which then HAS TO have the next correct and so on, in order to render the complete sequence you're trying to find the probability of. 0.5*0.5*0.5.

Another example, if you had you a single suit of 13 cards, took a card, put back, shuffled, then took again, to get 3 aces in a row would be 1/13*1/13*1/13.
Report Foinavon • March 10, 2016 7:25 PM GMT
It's 1 in 8 Ozymandius.
Although there are only 4 types of outcome, hht and tth have a higher probability than hhh or ttt (as shown by kincsem). It's similar to rolling two dice where 7 is more likely than 12 or 2.
Report Just Checking • March 10, 2016 7:28 PM GMT
Combinations v Permutations.
Report Ozymandius • March 10, 2016 7:35 PM GMT
ok, Foinavon, thanks, that's a helpful explanation.

anybody want 4/1 then pm me

i too once had a coin land on its side, we never got a proper calculation of odds of it happening
very very small no doubt , getting on for 1,000,000 to one at a guess

Probability Questions:
1. If I put a pound coin in a pub urinal, then an average forumite came in, what's the odds the pound coin would still be there when he left?
2. If the answer to "1" was no coin, what's the odds the sink taps wouldn't have been used?

LaughWhoops
