St Ettiene were a decent side back then. Got to the Final in 76.
_____________

They were possibly the BEST team in Europe during parts of the 70s  ,certainly around  1977 .

So WHAT...Showaddywaddy were big in the 1970's as well. You dont hear people banging on about them all the time.

Messi, Suarez, Ronaldo et al would've torn a new one against the boozed up, hangovered, ciggy stinking teams of the 70s/80s.

Just keep your tin-pot format where the big guns could fall at the first fence back in the doldrums please.

Don't forget Malmo.

Must have been one hell of a team also.

Malmo beat the French and Soviet champions so were clearly a decent side. Quality was more evenly distributed throughout Europe and the draw could cut up because the best sides could draw each other early, just as Forest played the reigning champions Liverpool in the first round in 1978. Liverpool lost to those giants of the game CSKA Sofia, Dynamo Tblisi and Widzew Lodz during that period. It was a different time.

After a further look (out of boredom between races at Kempton) in the 76-77 tournament Kiev became the first team to beat Bayern in 4 seasons, then narrowly lost the semi final. Malmo knocked them out two seasons later. In 76-77 Malmo only lost 2-1 on aggregate to Italian champions Torino.

Brugge beat Atletico and Juventus before losing to Liverpool in the final. The season before they beat Real Madrid and lost only 3-2 to Monchengladbach.

These were very decent sides. As for St Etienne they would probably have beaten the great Bayern at Hampden had there not been bizarre square goalposts.

Yeah, makes me sick all these people constantly going on about the great St Etienne team of the 70s. Give it a rest, you people!

Agreed. Who wants to see competitive games before Christmas when you could have the security blanket of largely meaningless groups to ensure the big guns like Man U safely make it to the knockout phase?

Rather see the team that finishes 2nd in La liga than Celtic in the Group stages.......HTH.

Well you must be delighted with the current format that has devalued UEFA's 2nd competition to a laughing stock, eliminated the 3rd, while simultaneously devaluing domestic leagues to the extent that Arsenal's ambition every year is to finish 4th.

Hurrah for progress.
