A pity CRISP was a bit too early for the John Francome years. Never tire of watching that race and just caught in the last second and 2 strides away from the post. He flew those fences like they were hurdles. Pitman was a nice enough guy but as a jockey he had all the bad luck going. In the space of 3 weeks he had been beaten a short head on PENDIL in the Gold Cup, and just beaten in the Grand National. It was difficult to imagine that there was worse to come, but a week later that brilliant young horse with so much potential, KILLINEY, in a 4-horse race at Ascot, it looked like he only had to stay in third gear to win it -which I think would have been his 10th consecutive win over fences. He was skipping over the fences but suddenly made one mistake on the final circuit and came down. He had broken his shoulder, and had to be destroyed. |
