loads of rough spots in brum take your pick sparkhill-small heath -alum rock and that wonderful place nechells and the list goes on and on

Lived in a few of those and didn't find any of them rough, with the exception of Nechells had you said Aston then would have definitely agreed,also lived in Easterhouse in Glasgow for nigh on 4 years,never had a problem,never saw a fight. Most inner city area's could be considered rough I suppose,sign of the times.

You've missed out Newtown. There not so long ago and asked what were the popping noises. "Just guns" said my colleague.

Newtown/Nechells much the same area,lived in Newtown for a few years before the drug lords took over,one on every corner,complete with several mobile phones,even the school crossing lollipop man was convicted of drug dealing while working.

Scary is a very good word to describe Grangetown, DO.I would never walk through it these days, bad enough driving through for fear that the car may break down luckily I have no cause to visit there now.

PS, I think the club you are thinking of is known as 'The Tute'  short for The Institute working mans club. There may be one called 'The Chew' though. Maybe a few people have had their ears chewed off in there

Lived in Tennyson road among many others, drank in every pub along the Coventry road,loved the place,banter among the Irish was great,went thru there recently and didn't recognize the place but never felt threatened.

Voluntary work , was it Emden ? Only been through Grangeown once and wouldn't want to stop there too long but been spared the nightlife experience. I would have thought Moss Side would rival the place though.

I grew up in the east end of London, lived for a year or so in Luton, for 5 years in Liverpool and spent summers in my childhood/youth very near to Jaywick (which wasn't rough back then - but it is rough now!!!) and I went there only last week to have a look round, now as rough as sandpaper.

All those places are rough, but I have been more worried when visiting 2 other places. I nominate:

tbf I was concerned about where I parked the car.

Moss Side has improved immeasurably over the last 5 - 10 years. The police and the council arrested and moved on dispersing many of the gangs and trouble makers.

In their place they moved in lots of somali refugees who tended to be families who want to get on in life. The number of shootings organised crime issues have dropped significantly.

Not too far off Study. Belle Vue is in East Manchester technically Gorton I think. It's three or four miles away from Moss Side which is South Manchester. Used to love going to the dogs there when I was a nipper back in the 70's but many of the inner and surrounding areas of Manchester are a bit rough and ready.

Rusholme is a bit rough around there,especially if you area young and vulnerable female surrounded by Somali boys,apprently ! My lass went to Uni there 20 years ago and loved it but I would have serious doubts letting her go to Manchester uni nowadays.

My early dog days, eo - and most of the most recent ones were at Walthamstow. Still the best sports stadium of any kind ever, imo.
Plus as a kid, Saturday mornings at Hackney.

Sadly no, Capt. I gave it up, 3 months ago, it was way too expensive to run and the stress and grief were way too much. A dead business for the indy, I can't see many, if any single (or even a few) shop operations lasting much longer.
I'm doing something else now, something totally new and which I've had to learn about very quickly and, on the plus side, I'm back darn sarf!

Blimey - that takes me back. Back in 1977 or 1978 I was involved in negotiation of the compulsory purchase of that place. The agent for the owners told me in all seriousness that if I didn't offer him at least twice what the property and business was worth, he would be beaten up on the owners' instructions by Bunny Johnson who was at the time British light heavyweight champion and trained at the Golden Gloves.

The owners' agent didn't know that Bunny Johnson was training when I inspected and measured the premises. He was such a nice bloke that I never had a moment of worry about the health and well-being of the idiot negotiating on behalf of the Club.

On my travels been to few **** holes

was working renovating a house in hackney in summer in  the late 80s ,first day there asked one of the other workers where the nearest betting shop was as wanted to put a bet on ,he said well theres one about a quarter of a mile away but you dont want to go there really , whys that i said ? well its a bit rough round there he said ,just tell us how to get there i live in deptford its rough there cant be any worse than that ,he looked a bit doubtfull but told me the directions ,me and a mate walked to the shop went past some nice old victorian houses seemed quiet and decent ,heard some music in the distance didnt pay much attention to it followed the music and it led us to the street where the bookies was ,turned into the street and fook me it looked as though we had been transported to the bronx in new york full of menacing looking  jamaican rastas gangster pimps types  etc most of them made mike tyson look like a quiorboy  within 4 yards of turning into the street we was offered every drug know to man , when we said we were not here to buy drugs we were jostled and asked if we were police fook me it was like running the gauntlet,there were big hi -fi  speakers on the pavement outside some of the houses and reggae or rap music was booming out and not another  white face in sight, to say we stood out like sore thumbs would be an understatenet  to be honest i would have been more comfortable wearing a millwall kit in the west ham end  ,cars were pulling up and drugs and cash were being exchanged openly on the street , heads down and muttering under my breath fook this for a game of soldiers we headed on to the bookies for sanctury ,just as we aproached the shop a crazy rasta in just shorts and a cloth bag around his waist  stopped in front of us dancing to the beat of the music and pulling out of the bag all sorts of drugs telling us the prices and dancing like a man possesed,looked like  he had only  3 big  teeth in his head one at the front and one at each side  looked like he had a 3 pin plug in his gob ! anyway opened the shop door and caught a backdraft of cannabis fumes fook me it looked as though the shop was on fire  thick smoke ! every one inside had a joint on on hindsight you didnt need to buy any weed off the dealers to get high, just stand in the shop for a few mins would have done the trick ! the shop was like a fooking asylum ! races were on the screens and the shouting and swearing was in full flow ,a race was nearing the finish and one jamaican was extreamly animated and was whacking his arse with a rolled up newspaper and shouting at the top of his voice in the jamaican brouge  BEN FOOK HIM NOW ! BEN FOOK HIM NOW !AND RIDING OUT A FINISH USING THE ROLLED UP  PAPER AS A WHIP! i can laugh now but at the time it was very intimidating , the poor b,stard of a shop  manager  and staff must have been paid danger money to work there ! wrote the bet out nervously and hurried to the counter to get the fook out of this hell hole of a place ,do you want a price said the guy behind the counter ! ffs fook the price i just want to get out of there ! got out of the shop and  headed the opposite way back up the street didnt want to run the gauntlet again ,as we were heading up the street a police van shot past us ,it waS NOT A NORMAL POLICE VAN THIS FOOKER HAD MESH GRILLS ON EVERY WINDOW AND WAS MORE LIKE AN ARMOUED CAR THEY USED IN IRELAND AT THE TIME ,IT NEVER STOPPED IT LOOKED LIKE THE OLD BILL DIDNT WANT TO PARTY WITH THE LOCALS either ,that was on a quiet weekday ,fook knows what it was like on a weekend when they really let their hair down !

i live a mile from grangetown pedaled through everyday to work at all times of the day for 30 years,its rough but the drunks,drug users arnt outside on the streets,its rough but saw the pictures of gentrified manchester city centre where all the spice zombies are lying about ,it aint like that,
live 4 mile away but only been into middlesbrough about twice in last 20 years,had to go in the town this morning,was only there 30 mins at 8 45
car pulled over thought it was a fella kissing his wife goodbye,but it was a young lad kissing an older fella goodbye
50 yds up the road some small bloke with a long grey beard and pointed hat was jaywalking across the rd,looked like one of the 7 dwarfs
then 50 yds up the road a young lass pushed by the wife turned around and screamed watch where your going you stupid foooking bitch,
i was home within the hour and wont be returning in a hurry and the shops had only just openned,
stayed in corby once little glasgow rough as fooook

anywhere north of northampton should be approached with caution.

lots of seaside towns all around the uk are rundown and rough as fook when the trippers and holiday makers have left, i would think 90% of london is a shoitehole,but heu keep showing us pictures of the wheel and city

yeh eston,redcar is very poor area these days,whilst saltburn which used to be a poor ,rough area is having a bit of money spent on it and showing the benefits of it

The price of insuring a BMW 3 Series in Bordesley Green, Birmingham B9 - the worst postcode found - was £1,101.62 per year compared with Aberdeen city centre which comes in at only £157 for the same car.

Just looked at home contents insurance quotes.  That clearly bears little resemblance to rough areas

James Turner St is in a rough rundown outskirt of the city but not exactly a no go area , though the bus journey along the Hollyhead rd/Soho Rd nearby into Birmingham city centre is like ANOTHER WORLD!!  you will be lucky to see one white guy along the entire like 3 mile stretch & full of busy shop fronts like BANK OF INDIA, Fruit stalls selling exotic fruit by the boatload etc with people just milling around all along the main road
People jump on & off the bus at every stop, you don't feel safe as a white guy on top deck , every single person on their phones loudspeaker in a different language to the other , it's a real hellhole!

though i wouldn't say that's even a no go area , just Very Confusing for a white guy!

Places like Small heath , Alum Rock are probably worse , even heard of signs NO WHITES AFTER 8.30PM

Then you've got the likes of Aston, Nechells, Lozells , Black areas full of gang activity, constant Muggings, shootings etc.

I live around 5 miles out from there & is multi-cultured , bit quieter , lots of Asians (they're mainly ok) and Polish etc.
though the number of Ambulances & Police cars that whizz past makes you wonder what the hell is going on sometimes

CLYDEBANK the car insurance is only so high because NOBODY HAS ANY!
