Each generation spends more than it brings in. They fund this by borrowing the shortfall. These people  as a whole therefore enjoy a lifestyle better than they should really be enjoying. They then "kick the debt can" down the road to the next generation.

Until a future generation is prepared to accept a lifestyle less than than the one that they could be enjoying, and start repaying the debt, the problem can NEVER be solved. How likely is this in our greedy "I want it now" society?

Like the oil, one day the money WILL run out , and the house of cards will come tumbling down.

All we can do is prolong the inevitable. It cannot be avoided.

If you rounded up all the cash in the world it is not enough to pay of the worlds debt.

This is because of interest, money that does not and never has existed, when you pay back a loan plus interest you were only ever lent the capital, the interest is imaginary but you still have to pay it so you have to get it from somewhere and technically you have to get it from someone else.

The world needs poor people, if everyone was rich thats no good to the government, they need people in debt to pay taxes and work in the fields growing food.

There is a solution, its radical and the stuff of science fiction movies and until governments start printing their own currency then the system will carry on. JFK and Abraham Lincoln tried it, look what happened to them.

Dark forces at work.

As long as you're getting enough of the pie what does it matter what sort of scheme it is?

Once upon a time money was backed up by gold in reserves and the collective wealth was supposed to amount to the total value of assets, minerals and commodities.....thats not really the case now, since around 2000 the inflated figure far exceeds that total.

I see many similarities between the economy and a ponzi scheme. The ponzi scheme is just capitalism in its most basic form as far as I can see, where future investors and growth are required to keep each afloat.
What I wonder though is what is it that makes the ponzi illegal? Is it the fact that the decision on who gets rewarded is decided by those taking a cut?

If you look at the gambling industry then you see a sector that provides nothing whatsoever, sure it employs people but then so would the ponzi scheme. The end result is nothing, some win some lose but nothing of value is created.
So I wondered if gambling is allowed then would a ponzi scheme be allowed if the decision on who gets a return is determined by a toss of a coin, just like gambling?
