It was the early days of Northern Soul before the bigger clubs latched on and people didn't have to travel to hear the music.

Sadly I know very little about Northern Soul, being a little bit young and not living anywhere near the UK's main centres for it. It looks like an interesting subculture though and I l enjoyed those recent BBC films and documentaries about the scene. Struck me as being a bit elitist though, rightly or wrongly.
Is this a Northern Soul song as I always loved it. Junior Walker and the All Stars "Walk In The Night'. . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgjpOl55oQ4 |

I may be wrong, but think if a song was released on the Motown label, strictly speaking it ain't NS. Dunno why, just remember being told by my older brother, who is a big fan of NS, but sneered at my Motown love.
Not checked that Jr Walker specific track btw, but know that he did record on TM. The Snake, as has previously been mentioned, is the standard. |

Guessed as much.
I hadn't though about it in nigh on 25 years, so turned to Wiki (I know) and apparently 'The northern soul movement, however, generally eschews Motown or Motown-influenced music that has had significant mainstream commercial success'. Your Jr Walker song might well qualify, it's a woolly definition. What is clear is that similar-to-Motown sounding recordings from smaller labels are much more highly regarded. |
