It never stopped being collectible, it's just become trendy to own once more so I guess it's 'more' collectible. As for what you own, it's unsurprisingly the rare stuff that's worth owt. You're looking for stuff on different labels, or a rare sleeve, or the ultra-rare stereo/mono version of a classic.

I'll take the lot off you for a score.

I once sold a Pink Floyd 'Wish you were here' LP to a Russian collector for £120 on ebay. I'd bought it when it was released in the 80's and hadn't opened the plastic wrapping until just before selling, because I had to check what pressing it was. If it had been a first pressing it could have got £400+

It's the only known copy of the pre-Beatles disc recorded at a local electrical shop by McCartney, Lennon and Harrison with drummer Colin Hanton and pianist John Duff Lowe. It's worth an estimated £100,000.

"Beatles/stones/all led zep x 2 /stones/deep purple /hendrix/floyd/t rex/bowie/elp etc etc "

Depending on the condition of them, but if no major deterioration in sound quality and the cover, they could be worth a bit. I use to buy and sell a lot vinyl - online and at these record fairs around the country - but don't do so much now apart from buying a few old record players and getting them professionally restored to sell. Only buy Dansette and Hacker, depending on condition but usually sell for between £150 - £400. (the one below is one I kept for myself, it's a HACKER CAVALIER).

For your record collection you could try advertising in the Record Collector magazine, and maybe get a collector come along to buy the lot. I'd suggest go for an all-in price, no cherry picking. Or break the collection down and sell them on ebay.

Report themightymac • January 23, 2016 9:56 PM GMT
Go on Amazon and look them up to see what kind of price they are selling for. Will give you a realistic value of them.

"Don't even think of selling them all to a record shop or private collector, they'll rip you off. They know the value."

Basically you got 2 choices, (1) sell them yourself, or (2) sell them to record shop or collector. With the second option I wouldn't call it a rip-off (having bought and sold a lot myself), but you have to appreciate a record shop has got overheads, rent, staff wages etc.

Or a private dealer (like I was) selling online and going to record fairs, still got a lot of overheads/expenses, transport - petrol money and parking, renting tables at record fairs (£35 - £50 for 1 table for the day, I usually had 2 tables), plus all the hassle. So whatever price they are worth you would probably get somewhere between 33% - 40%. Because a record shop or dealer has got expenses to cover.

So it's not a rip-off really, but yes you would most likely get more money selling them yourself, but then you have got all the hassle of doing that. Have a look on ebay (which can get you dazed and confused) and get an idea of prices. Although if you've got a large collection, the most comprehensive guide is the 'Record Collector Rare Record Price Guide'. People in the trade use that book and it will help you work out the value. Then it's up to you how you want to sell them.
Report themightymac • January 24, 2016 4:56 PM GMT
I appreciate that record shop owners have overheads and it`s only reasonable that they should have leverage for to make a profit. But buying a collection of 400 mint records for £100, that`s 25p a record, and selling them for £5 - £100 per album is a rip off in my opinion. Not saying every record shop does it but most do. A guy I know done this and was boasting in the pub that he sold one lp the next day for £100 and recovered his entire investment. The rest he`s selling from £5 - £100 each and it is sheer profit all the way. I would be wanting 33% of the value the record shop put on each record. If they notice a gold mine among all the records, not many are going to say to the person selling his collection, "By the way, that Beatles White Album is worth £10,000 alone".

The only lps I have that are valuable are Yazoo from the 80s; played once to tape and then stored. A dealer would give me nothing but a collector might stump up £30-£40 per disc.

Nice one Blackburn - I hadn't noticed that SOLD before.

I've stacks of old 60s/70s singles and will have a play with that tomorrow.

Report Hound-Dog-2 • January 24, 2016 7:37 PM GMT
Whatever a record is worth or valued at, basically it's only worth what somebody is prepared to pay for it.

You might have a rare disc in very good condition and a realistic guide value is £100. But it's only a valuable item if you can find someone to give you £100 for it.

themightymac - yes of course there are people who may notice some valuable stuff and not pay a fair price, but that is true across the whole collecting field, it doesn't matter if your selling rock'n'roll or jewellery.

If you're selling some valuable records directly to a collector, you should get a price close to the Rare Record Price Guide Book, (compiled by a research team with about 35 years experience in the field, based on latest prices at record fairs and shops).

But selling to a professional dealer, first get an idea yourself how much it's worth. Because the same basic mark-up applies, and you can't expect a dealer to pay more than 40%.

What is the most valuable record you have in your collection?

The most valuable one I did have was a Billy Fury LP. The Sound Of Fury, sleeve and record were excellent condition and got £160. I see there is an original one on ebay now for £125.  I was never a collector looking for that elusive gem or most valuable stuff, just go for music I like. But good to see vinyl making a big comeback today, mind you, for some of us vinyl never went away.
