Ok, I know I'm spoilt from when the decorators that I used would bring me 5 litres of the stuff for next to nothing.

That aside, the DIY outlets seem to have sod all in 5 litre tins, with otherwise all in 2.5 litres which goes nowhere!

Price for 2.5 litres of emulsion goes from around £16.00 for own branded white to an eye watering £44.00.

How in God's name can that be justified?

All my exterior woodwork is coated with "Sadolin-Extra" at a ridiculous £18.00 for just 1 Litre.

Are you buying that fancy striped stuff?
Stick to plain colours, much cheaper.

AP ....rip all the wood out and replace with plastic....sorted !
Report mememe • January 20, 2016 4:48 PM GMT
The leopard

you can buy paint to paint the plastic windows ... but it's mega expensive ... Aunty should stick with his wooden ones and keep the cost down.

All the palaver and cost of fitting new plastic windows and then painting them ... just not worth it IMO

at least no one's glossing over this.

it is so ridiculously expensive because even at those prices the public buy it.
One of those things that doesn't sell anymore if they drop the price.
Inelastic demand I think they call it in economic circles.

Right I'm going to load up a Supertanker with paint and ship it from China

AP...what colour would you like?

For the record I totally detest plastic windows with a vengeance. They and any other form of plastic on roof lines etc!

The only plastic here are the meter boxes, which are sprayed black.

I could have fitted plastic windows for a fraction of the price, as all mine are custom made joinery, with triple glazing to most,
and again, with the frames finished in matt black, and the opening sashes in "Antique Pine".

There really should be some control regarding acceptable styles of replacement windows, where at best they look ok, and at worst, downright ugly,
and no cohesiveness between one property and the next.

Perhaps it doesn't bother individuals like it does myself as most folk are clueless about such detail!

I was just messing about.....yes, always keep traditional older designs....I hate plastic aswell

Just get some Inuit decorators in......incredibly cheap !

And yet you gripe at paying £18 a litre for a high tech product which will protect your woodwork from the elements for years? I bet you wouldn't bat an eyelid at paying £18 or more for a litre of low tech distilled alcoholic beverage that lasts no time at all.

You don't get much for £18 a litre these days. That's just £12-60 for a 70 cl bottle.

why was there someone filming that Confused
Report Aunty Post • January 21, 2016 1:11 PM GMT
Yeah, agreed about the "Sadolin" as it it is urethane and spirit based, and I was also going to make the comparison between it and the price,
for instance, of a VSOP Brandy.

Only difference is that it is heavily taxed so the comparison doesn't stack up!

Still can't see how 2.5 litres of emulsion paint can be as much as £44.00!

Can you imagine what the paint on the Mona Lisa would have cost in the day?

Admittedly we've had inflation, but it must have cost at least £1million a tin.

And there's quite a few colours.
Report Aunty Post • January 21, 2016 3:37 PM GMT

Exactly! I get the impression that most of clips like this, shown on such as "can't think what it's called"
are staged because why would someone be recording them?

The painter presumably has been in there for some time, and has to have seen the guy come in, and if not he knows the door was closed and ,
sorry, I'm stating the obvious to the switched on Chit Chatters.

I doubt if him falling over the ladder was intended, so I hope the daft **** hurt himself!!

It must have been cheap water based paint, rather than oils, otherwise it wouldn't have come off when Mr Bean sneezed on it!

Something I have wondered too.  I found some old tins from about 20 years ago and Wilko paint which was OK was @2.99 for 2.5 litres.  Bet its £15 now.

Timber price also has gone crazy.

It's usually the farrow and ball, and dulux who are that dear. They,re in comp with each other. Then with vat on top, silly money. It's a total rip off.
Report seaside dreamer • January 21, 2016 9:00 PM GMT
In the trade myself, sadolins extra is a LONG lasting paint and if applied as per instructions will last for a good 7 years unlike cheaper diy store products.
Forget FARROW AND BALL ice colours but no guts.

If you shop for wallpaper they'll cut you a sample to take home and try but not with paint the tight b@stards want you to buy a little pot that barely gets your brush wet. AngryAngryAngry
Report Jack Hacksaw • January 22, 2016 10:01 AM GMT
Its the marketing of these products that has helped push the price up.

Aimed at the female.  Designer this, designer that.

Higher price, smaller tubs.

Report bix • January 22, 2016 10:16 AM GMT
It's a pity Woolworths have gone because their paint was always very highly rated by Which and dramatically cheaper than Dulux etc.
