David Bowie - RIP

I was a teenager in the 70's but its only really in the last few years that I've really appreciated David Bowie.

So many of his records bring back memories ...1983 Camden Palace dancing to Lets Dance with a new girlfriend.

I think people are so effected by his death because he actually seemed part of their lives and you only realise this when he's gone.

One of the few who really will still be played in 100's of years time.

The current cult of celebrity, where people are famous for being famous without displaying an ounce of talent makes me sick. I'd gladly round the whole lot of them up and use them as the first line of defence against ISIS with just a wooden stick to fight with.

However the news of his passing is truly a very sad day and tears have been shed by this 54 year old music fan who finds it hard to remember a time when David Bowie's music wasn't there.

RIP and 'wham bam thank you ma'am'

Started in '69 with the first version of Space Oddity, for me. I was 20 and probably one of the older original fans.Followed his career since. His songs were magical.

Immense talent.

Only just heard the dreadfully sad news. The big "C" yet again!

The first 8 Track I got was his, in the early years.

So much talent and an absolute pro, and clean living gent!

Can't help but be pretty choked up here and remembering him singing "Heroes" at The "Concert For New York" after 9-11.

R.I.P to that beautiful man....

lay me place and bake me pie from bewlay bros...r i p  - one of the best songwriters from the uk.

not often I get emotional when a so called rock star dies but this has shook me up big time. Was only watching him perform Blackstar a couple of nights ago on youtube and thought even Bowies starting to look old these days..... ri p  a total one off we will never see the like of again.

Great musican and person
R.I.P

Ricky Gervais email.

On his 57th birthday I wrote

'57, isn't it about time you got a proper job?

Ricky Gervais, comedian, 42'.

He sent back

"I have a proper job. David Bowie, Rock god."

What a phenomenally successful life. Well played that man.

A sad day,RIP David.

Not really my cup of tea was Bowie but I do appreciate his effect, influence and legendary status within the music industry which can't be doubted.

RIP David

I miss him already.

R.I.P. Genius..

Still the most famous artist to namecheck the town of Eastbourne in a song

Genius

He'll ALWAYS be a hero - not just for one day..

RIP   Apparently been Fighting cancer for 18 months

saw bowie in concert at wembley the man was a music genius.only bowie could make hes last album about hes up coming death R.I.P BOWIE

An all time great has gone. A very sad day. The most important artist of the 70's and one of the most important in popular music history. R.I.P. David.

RIP
(and sorry for starting a second thread).

crikey  - i thought he would live forever in a weird sort of way . Some great early work.
R.I.P

Most poignant "Stop all the Clocks" Moment since Lennon .

Yeah...mine pretty much stopped all day, and watching vids didn't help.

He was a very private person and I never knew he was ill.

One thing that impresses me about the man, is he never got into "Grunge"!!!

an immense talent, I can imagine his work still being shown a hundred years from now. R.I.P

Didn't you listen to Tin Machine?

rtb, I wasn't actually a fan, I was into other music. Blues, Soul, RnB, etc, There's no denying the effect he had on music and the "Pop" world in particular, the reinventions were superb and started a trend that made pop much more interesting, I read somewhere years ago that Anthony Newley had an influence on him??.

It's time had a listen, I've no doubt listening for lyrics alone will be worth it.

I had ***
Is there anything in particular to watch out for in Tin Machine??.

Sorry btf, my remark was aimed at Aunty Post.

Tin Machine was his late 80's reinvention and was an exploration of hard rock (Grunge - though you'd hardly call such a dapper individual a grunge style - icon!).

I'll dig out the Albums, from which the single  'Under The God' is the best track IMO

Desperately sad news, he was truly an iconic man.

Sad news. Influenced a generation. A friend spoke to him at Cheltenham Festival once. RIP

feel like a bit of my youth went this morning. As the Guy said earlier...now with Ronson. RIP

The first tape of his i listened too was LOW , and this song was the one i thought of upon hearing of his passing for some reason .

RIP David Bowie - a true legend of music - thanks for all the treasure !!!

We're everyone that ever cared

Very sad day, that recent Lazarus video is a hard watch.

When rock stars were rock stars - one of the greats - possibly second only to McCartney.

RIP Dave !

"Future Legend"

And in the death
As the last few corpses lay rotting on the slimy
thoroughfare
The shutters lifted in inches in Temperance Building
High on Poacher's Hill
And red, mutant eyes gaze down on Hunger City
No more big wheels

Fleas the size of rats sucked on rats the size of cats
And ten thousand peoploids split into small tribes
Coverting the highest of the sterile skyscrapers
Like packs of dogs assaulting the glass fronts of Love-Me Avenue
Ripping and rewrapping mink and shiny silver fox, now legwarmers
Family badge of sapphire and cracked emerald
Any day now
The Year of the Diamond Dogs

"This ain't Rock'n'Roll

This is Genocide"

"Diamond Dogs"

As they pulled you out of the oxygen tent
You asked for the latest party

With your silicone hump and your ten inch stump
Dressed like a priest you was
Todd Browning's freak you was

Crawling down the alley on your hands and knee
I'm sure you're not protected, for it's plain to see
The Diamond Dogs are poachers and they hide behind trees
Hunt you to the ground they will,
mannequins with kill appeal

[CHORUS]
(Will they come?) I'll keep a friend serene
(Will they come?) Oh baby, come unto me
(Will they come?)
Well, she's come, been and gone.

Come out of the garden, baby
You'll catch your death in the fog
Young girl, they call them the Diamond Dogs

The Halloween Jack is a real cool cat
And he lives on top of Manhattan Chase

The elevator's broke, so he slides down a rope
Onto the street below, oh Tarzie, go man go

Meet his little hussy with his ghost town approach
Her face is sans feature, but she wears a Dali brooch
Sweetly reminiscent, something mother used to bake

Wrecked up and paralyzed, Diamond Dogs are sableized

[CHORUS]

In the year of the scavenger, the season of the bitch
Sashay on the boardwalk, scurry to the Ditch
Just another future song, lonely little kitsch
(There's gonna be sorrow) try and wake up tomorrow

[CHORUS]

Ooh, call them the Diamond Dogs [x2]
Bow-wow, woof woof, bow-wow, wow
Call them the Diamond Dogs [ad lib]

Keep cool - Diamond Dogs rule, OK
Beware of the Diamond Dogs [repeat]

Just loved that melodramatic voice

This Is Not America/Because You're Young/Where Are We Now....

A million dreams..a thousand memories from the golden years.

God bless

RIP David Bowie

brilliant adjuster

Thanks rtb...looks like I was in at the beginning and the end, but missed the bit inbetween!

World class bandwagon-jumper and trend spotter, like Madonna. Anthony Newley had more talent in one little finger than DB ever had, but as ever, the pasticheur triumphs at the expense of the original.

The voice? Anthony Newley...The cut and paste lyrics : Surrealists did that decades before...The Ashes to Ashes vid : check out Sergei Parajanov's The Colour of Pomegranates from 1969...at least Kraftwerk saw him coming when he took up residence in Germany...and those hospital bed shots in the last video : Got that from Gottfried : that is, Gottfried Helnwein. Also, "Lazarus", "heaven", etc.- give it a rest, mate - I can get the original for free.

Having said that, he MUST have had some sort of remarkable talent, since that is only the second enthusiastic, positive comment I can remember reading from Thin and Crispy...fanboy!

So...he was a messenger boy, packaging and delivering the avant-garde to the masses.

P.S. That work pays very well.

P.P.S. So does working for the BBC - and they managed to deliver the first 15 minutes of tonight's news as a nascent pop video, out-doing anything ever attempted by Chris Morris. An astonishing achievement.

you don't say! he"s mentioned all these people in interviews over the years as being important to him

Funnily enough, that's the part of him I liked, Velasquez: that he was basically a pop fan, and sometimes we bought the same records.

I mean, I was thrilled when it turned out he'd also got hold of a copy of Neu!75, also liked the side of instrumentals and the track Hero on the record, and then buggered off to Germany and recorded an LP called "Heroes", complete with a side of instrumentals. I felt in on it somehow.

The late Arthur Lee of Love actually had a letter from Bowie asking for advice on how to be a pop star. In the end he was a fan like us who got to live the dream. Not an artist or a visionary, but most people would have found at least a couple of his records they really liked.

Well done, mate.

OK, I'll back off now - I can clearly see how WRONG I am. Failing that, I'll post some random sh1t cobbled together from various books and papers stacked up in the bog, disguised as a poem or lyric...that's GOT to be worth a GO, you Diamond Doggie fanboys!!

In fact...why don't we ALL do that...as a tribute to Davey Jones?? Eah, the...the thought...the mere thought...!

Grab yer scissors and glue you basturts!

Hope TT isn't a Bowie fan, Vel, for your sake! If he is he'll be wanting to fight you... do you want some? do you want some? Cos I'll give it ya

and you call yourself a fan! get outta here

Velasquez....the van is on it's way.....stay where you are.....you have been chosen for re-education !

R.I.P Bowie an inspiration to millions worldwide and a true star.

All I know about Bowie is that the sight of him turned my stomach.

Sorry about that but it's the truth.

Hi Vel HNY, I was never a fan but fair play he did a Shakespere with poppy aplomb. To appreciate the works of others and use them in a different idiom is a talent, and he had it in spades why reinvent the wheel when there are perfectly good ones about, the Antony Newley influence is easily recognisable in his voice.

but no...we have to suffer the same old sh1t on here

Call it something like Desolation Low, and we could release it as a great lost single from his Hunky Dory/Song For Bob Dylan period imo.

Hey, that is CLASSY, Mister! We can drop the stuff about the Scottish Cup draw if you reckon it will bring in more $$moolah.

It's what he would have wanted.

Still no mention of The Laughing Gnome.  I had hoped to hear it in one of the tributes.  Still hoping.

I think I saw you in an ice-cream parlor,
drinking milk shakes cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine,
don`t think you knew you were in this song

Happy new year Bodil ya tool!

And HNY to you and the other gentle posters.  Bit late for Bowie.  Though maybe he's just taking this year off dead for tax avoidance reasons.

Did yer try for the big brash lottray jackpot, Bodil fella? I had a lot of LIME and TEAL for the raffles. How were you coloured yourself?

I won £25.  Sorry.

But what about the film?  Saw it in London - central art house stuff.

Whoops - we may be treading on the revered relics of Bowie.  Shift it to your thread.

Life on Mars was part of the background to my attempt to become a world-class drunk.  Along with Steely Dan, Lou Reed, Stevie Wonder and many others.  When he abruptly changed genre I knew he would fail.  And again and again and again and again.  Well, he's not going to contradict me this time (bar a no 1 album and several no 1 singles).

Bowie and Tin Machine performing Space Boy live on The Jools Holland Show was absolutely incredible.
His vocals and their musicianship was stunning.

Hey Velasquez, just read your allegedly disrespectful night-shift rant. You never mentioned Grayson Perry Shocking omission.

IMO

Bowie and Tin Machine performing Space Boy live on The Jools Holland Show was absolutely incredible.

That wasn't Tin Machine was it ? (apart from one of the guitarists)

Degs

You're absolutely correct - it's not. Thanks for questioning it. I've been living with that misnomer for over 20 years !
It's taken some research on line , but finally I've unearthed the truth

Tour band

David Bowie - vocals

Reeves Gabrels - guitar
Carlos Alomar - guitar
Gail Ann Dorsey - bass guitar, vocals
Zack Alford - drums
Mike Garson - piano
Peter Schwartz - synthesizer, musical director
George Simms - backing vocals, keyboards

What a line up. All renowned musicians in the industry.

These were the musicians that backed him on The Outside Tour which opened  on 14th September 1995( the album was released on 25th Sept)

This was the band that appeared on The Jools Holland Show, and played an absolute stunning live version of Spaceboy.

Thanks again Degs for the education

I saw him on that tour

I know it's stating the bleedin' obvious but it's only this week that makes you realise that Bowie was
surely the greatest for getting such geniuses to work with him

Robert Fripp
Carlos Alomar
Adrian Belew

totally agree, i googled the tune when i saw the ad on tv a few weeks ago. wonderful voice.. maybe even better in those early days.

thanks for the link SULTAN, its intresting to see the great mans taste in music, i had the velvet underground album in the 80s and never really

liked it and gave it to a mate of mine, i really quite like it now.

I heard it on the advert today, GC. I put the lyrics in Google to find it.

It's the Velvets album you're supposed to like, which is why Bowie listed it. On the one hand parts of the record are virtually indecipherable owing to John Cale's incompetent production, but on the other hand Andy Warhol designed the cover, so it must brilliant and, like, art and all that. Just don't try listening to it.

They made three wonderful albums once they ditched Warhol and Cale - the third one, Loaded and Live 1969 - but they never make the sort of list where you're trying to look sort of artistic like.

It's the same story where Bowie lists Syd Barrett's The Madcap Laughs. The man was a wreck when they tried to put this record together, and again the songs just stop and start, Syd forgets the words, misses chords etc. After that he got it together enough to make a second LP, Barrett, but because it's polished and memorable and a pleasure to listen to, it's never going to make this sort of list.

2 years today, they don't make them like this anymore, there is no one in the wings to replace him. A true loss.
