Diagnosed with Viral Labyrinthitis 4 months ago. It is horrible condition, balance totally compromised.Awaiting appointment with Consultant at ENT dept. The trouble is there is no cure. The virus will have cleared up ages ago. If symptoms still remain it means vestibular system in inner ear has been permanently damaged. The only recourse is to undergo rehabilitation therapy to 'retrain' the brain to accept different balance messages between ear and eye. Apparently this can lead to a 80. - 90% of original balance.

I am seriously deaf and got a shock on my first hearing test. I was the last person on that day, and I asked on a scale of 1-10, how bad I was.
The answer was that I was the worst seen on that day!
Also, that I needed two hearing aids which was an even bigger shock! I hated them at first, but now wouldn't be without them.
I can't have the discreet, in the ear, ones as they are just not "powerful" enough.

Me too AP. I can only hear in one ear though, since the surgeons messed up my op on the right (I was diagnosed with otosclerosis when I was 29). Had the nice wee i-t-e aids at first but now I need the power. Pretty crap that the technology is not moving as fast as my hearing deterioration.
Hearing in only one ear can be a bummer - no stereo, and chasing round the house sometimes trying to find a noise - but an advantage when the gf gives me grief.

Been deaf for 50 years with otosclerosis andnreve damage, a very unpleasant ailment but you learn to get by. Use one hearing aid but often add a smaller in-the-ear one for meetings and times when I need to be more aware, particularly group discussions. Lost count of the number of times young women have invited me to bed but I have said a glass of white please ! Seriously, good luck facts , I have often disagreed with you but wouldn't wish this on anyone. Go early, pay private consultation if you need to,you can still have the treatment via your ENT as normal. The sooner you are diagnosed the better chance you have of saving it.

Thanks treetop. Going private for the consultation looks likely, as original date has been cancelled. If the replacement date is too far in the future then private it will be.

I suffer from labrynthitis. Had it for over 15 years. When it first came on i went totally deaf in one ear and it was scary to think id lost my hearung for good. Had tests etc done over a serious of weeks and they feared it may have been menieres disease which wouldve been leading to a loss of hearing in both ears. However my hearing returned to normal in the "deaf" ear a week later which lead to the conclusion of labrynthitis.

When I had labyrinthitis I was not deaf, just incapacitated. It hit me like a good punch and I went down for six weeks or so. One second fine and the next gone. No balance , just out of the game.

I wasnt hit that hard dunlaying but my balance was terrible, but id put up with something related to it for years until i had the fully blown episode so proibably didnt effect me as bad as most others.
But it went as quick as it came.... no telling when it will return but i know it frightened me bigtime
