Shocking stuff. Found at http://order-order.com/2015/12/22/betting-shops-turning-into-war-zones/

Pressure continues to pile on the government over the £100 a spin roulette machines taking over the high streets. The Sun and the Daily Mirror, within 24 hours of each other, this week revealed a 50% increase in police call outs to betting shops and 1,300 incidents of violence on premises in London alone.

Betting shops, which now account for 97% of all police call outs to gambling premises in the UK (casinos, amusement arcades and bingo halls combined amount to just 3%), have become the scourge of the gambling industry. The other gambling sectors have turned on the bookies for bringing the industry into disrepute with their “crack cocaine of gambling”, telling the government to “do the right thing and bring the stake on these machines in line with all other high street gaming machines”.

Councils and their national representatives, who have now decided to take on the government again to force them to take action on the 35,000 machines, have had enough of violent incidents erupting on their high streets. Grown men have been witnessed flying into fits of rage after losing thousands then smashing not one, not two, not three but sometimes four machines – plus TVs, doors and windows, sometimes even setting fire to shops causing staff to flee for their lives. It’s incidents like these that prompted a group of 22 Labour, SNP and DUP MPs, led by Graham Jones (with not a Lib Dem in sight), to write to the bookies calling on them to end lone staffing of their shops. That’s right, the bookies, whilst their shops have been turning into war zones, have been cutting wage costs and leaving lone shop workers to face knives and violence.

In Westminster the council this week decided to act and took the unprecedented step of telling William Hill at its shop located at 357 Harrow Rd, London to get bouncers on the door! After holding a review of the licence and taking evidence from the police, local businesses, residents and community leaders, evidence was brought forward showing anti-social behaviour, drug dealing and taking, vulnerable people being threatened, stolen goods being bought and sold and alcohol being openly consumed on the premises. William Hill, which has obviously not learnt from its ticking off in Scotland for aggressive lobbying and not taking no for an answer, was rebuked again by Westminster’s head of licensing, which told the company to stop contacting all his licensing colleagues over the Harrow Rd licensing review.

If a Holyrood Committee and Westminster licensing authority feel burdened and harassed by the bookies lobbyists, imagine the lobbying going on at Number 10 and 11! No wonder the bookies are now referred to as a “corporate mafia”.

Can you really put £100 a spin on those things?  What a coont T Blair was, an awful way to gamble.

The only thing the article talks about is solving the problem of violence in the shops. What happen when they get home Confused

Machines are obviously heinous and I'll never get the attraction of using them. The massive inconsistency though remains with the ability to spend much more by logging into any one of bundles of betting, casino and bingo firms on your mobile and emptying out your bank account while maybe getting hammered on cheap booze or something less legal with no supervision whatsoever.

There are two arguments to this debate:

1 This is a free country and people should be allowed to make their own choices.
2 The people that profit from this kind of gambling are coonts, it is obscene and should be banned.

I am in the (2) camp

I can see both sides. People are free to make a choice and criminals and failures - for want of a better word - are all too eager to point the finger at their "addiction" before taking their medicine and accepting the choices that they freely made.

On the other side there always has to be checks and balances. Free speech up to a point. Some substances are illegal while others not. On the whole the experts and law makers do a good job on deciding where that line is.

On this point, I'd personally revert to the Gambling Commission's recent Primary Gambling Activity idea. They've been hoodwinked by some premises opening as betting shops but simply housing machines and having a grotty, cheap self service betting terminal to point to if someone visits. Similarly a big pub chain applied for a bingo licence purely so they could stick some B3 machines in their pubs rather than the fruit machines. The idea then is that if you state your business is as a betting shop and that's what your licence entitles you to then that's what you should be:- a traditional betting shop as we all know, offering dogs, football and horses; other products such as 49s, virtual racing and machines are simply add-ons to your main purpose. Sadly, this has gone massively out of whack and machines are now dominant in shops taking over 50% of all revenue. The need is to get the balance right and for a betting shop to be a betting shop with the extraneous products treated as they should be.

For that then, I'd probably be in favour of a reduction in the stake and prize money. £2 though is ridiculous and is a ban under another name purely and simply. Maybe something like £10 or £20 though on stakes and £100 on prizes and similar restrictions on other rng games that bookies might want to develop in their stead. It's not right that in a betting shop you can stake to win £500 on a machine but would be offered a fraction of that on a horse race or televised football match.

the only thing they are then likely to smash up is their own mobile !

Betting shops are not nice places to be in when players are on the machines, effing and jeffing at every spin

If you go into a shop, do your dough on fobt's and smash up the shop, staff have been instructed NOT to call the police.
