Documentary charting the extraordinary gathering of polar bears that occurs every year in early September off the Arctic coast of Alaska. Up to 80 bears congregate on the frozen shores of Barter Island near the Inupiat village of Kaktovik, where they feast on the remains of hunter-harvested bowhead whales.
Polar bears are typically intensely solitary creatures, so this behaviour is highly atypical, and has attracted the interest of photographers, scientists and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
The programme also makes use of cutting-edge GPS tracking collars to trace the journey undertaken by two polar bear mothers, who must either risk contact with humans or make a perilous journey into the frozen north if they are to feed their young cubs
