Surely the food producers should be encouraging this.

A jammy faced brat stuffs his face until his little fat belly is sufficiently gorged.
Take the sugar out of their pop, and they'll feel that little bit more hungry and eat another cream cake or biscuits to make up for it.
It's people eating too much food that is the problem. Not what's in it.

So surely less sugar equals increased food sales?
A sugar tax would simply make the weekly shopping bill more expensive, and achieve little else.

will taste like sh!t without added sugar
Report donny osmond • November 30, 2015 12:18 PM GMT
the price of sugar has halved more or less in the last year or so it seems

how much will the tax need to be before it has any effect, if the inflated
price of the last year had no effect
Report brendanuk1 • November 30, 2015 12:40 PM GMT
Its no brainer on the medical evidence. Introduce it and raise it till it does have effect.

The the health costs of the damage it cause are currently paid for by the tax payer, so rather the fatties with bad teeth pay their own way

tax the trolley/basket, not the item.

A packet of biscuits in a trolley full of vegetables should get no tax.

A packet of biscuits in a trolley full of soft drinks, cake, sugary ready meals should be taxed at 200% (along with all the other items).
Report brendanuk1 • November 30, 2015 2:41 PM GMT
as far as I l know its just going to be a tax on full sugar soft drinks to make the diet choice of soft drink better price wise.
As the full fat fizzy drinkers apparently need another reason to switch other than their kids rotten teeth

Youngest daughter was showing me the daily menus, as to what my grandson had for the week at nursery.

I noted that he only has water!

I asked her why he couldn't have fruit juice, and she said because it's loaded with sugar!

My response was that I was meaning fresh fruit juice with no added sugar.

I checked a carton of such fruit juice here and was staggered to see the amount of sugar in the fresh fruit!

I still find it hard to accept, because we are encouraged to eat fresh fruit, but of course, in so doing,
we are also eating the fibre, so the sugar content is minimised!

I agree only if smoking and alcohol tax are reduced

I don't want to pay more tax

Personally I think peoples health is their own concern not the governments or some medical Hitler

Yet more evidence of how we are turning into a society of women

Live dangerously buy a Mars barLaugh

Also a sugar tax would only deter the poor, not the rich, I strongly object!
Report Dr Crippen • November 30, 2015 4:04 PM GMT
A sugar tax won't deter anyone from eating too much.
That's the problem, you can't tax people out of having an appetite for food.
Report HH Sultan Vinegar • November 30, 2015 4:14 PM GMT
What about taxing a bar of Cadbury's Fruit n Nut? The chocolate would be rich in sugar but the fruit and nuts would be part of a healthy diet. Plain
Report FlowerMyth • November 30, 2015 4:18 PM GMT
Yes, it's madness. And it's not taxing all sugary food afaik, just one area - soft drinks. So little Johnny will just get more sweeties if Mum can't afford more pop.

Taxing's not the answer anyway, make the food satiating and they wont want superfluous calories. It's the roller coaster of blood sugar that causes hunger from eating sugary foods. Put the fat back, take the carbs out. Fat ensures satiety and also makes it taste nicer. One major hurdle though is getting parents to cook real food with meat and low glycemic vegetables in place of bunging a packet in the microwave 6 or 7 nights a week.

there's now a group called 'Overweight Haters' (not a good name) who are giving fatties cards on the underground telling them they're overweight.
The other side reads: “Our organisation hates and resents fat people. We object to the enormous amount of food resources you consume while half the world starves.”

“We disapprove of your wasting NHS money to treat your selfish greed. And we do not understand why you fail to grasp that by eating less you will be better off, slimmer, happy and find a partner who is not a perverted chubby-lover, or even find a partner at all.”

That's life, I don't think we should be living our lives just to save people paying for the Health service
Well if people feel that bad, then make people who get too fat, pay something towards their own healthcare when they need it

It does not over rule our basic human right to do what we want with our own bodies does it?

By introducing sugar tax on top of smoking and alcohol tax, everybody is being punished who likes these
...whether they need the Health Service or not

....I think this is wrong
Report ebulGery • December 1, 2015 1:58 AM GMT
I think the problem here is, the National Health Society, a wonderful idea, has now grown into a tyrant.
People are having to adjust their lives just because of the needs of the NHS, it is imprisoning us.
This is utterly ridiculous.

The NHS is turning into a version Of Adolf Hitler.

I think we may need to disband it and go back to health insurance, which is sad.

I do not want my life governed by the needs of the NHS...it is too much.
Report brendanuk1 • December 1, 2015 10:55 AM GMT

Surely then in the NHS model, the slim and healthy are subsidising the lard bellies?

While in private health care you pay for the risk that you pose to the medical companies not pay for someone else's treatments.

Sugar tax?

Great idea, he must be minted all those series of tired, derivative rubbish they've been putting out all these years.

In fact - his b0110cks, Karen Brady's jump leads, Nick Hewers generator!

There's a Sugar tax and a half for you.
