Ah yes, I forgot about 2001 - a space odyssey. Richard Strauss' 'Also Sprach Zarathustra' was an inspirational choice by Stanley Kubrick. Also, I never thought I would consider the avant garde in classical music, but I also though Ligeti's 'Atmospheres' was superb and another great choice for that particular section of the film.

Mentioning Miller Park has reminded me of one of my favourite fillums, Miller's Crossing. I always loved the theme tune but didn't realise until fairly recently that it's an old piece of Irish music, Lament for Limerick (or Limerick's Lamentation,) arranged by longtime Coen Bros collaborator, Carter Burwell. Anywho..

Mikael D'Haguenet - not heard that music from Miller's Crossing before - great stuff - love it!
Another one that I forgot is the theme music from the TV series 'Brideshead Revisited'. I know it wasn't a cinema film, but I still liked the music. I have to admit, I am slightly biased in this choice as I knew the composer Geoffrey Burgon. I did many gigs with him many years ago now and sadly he died a few years ago. At his funeral, some of his music was played live in the church and one particular piece of Geoff's was played near the end of the service which had everybody in tears. It's a beautiful piece which was played during the end credits of another TV series, 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' starring Alec Guinness. The piece is called the 'Nunc Dimittis' and here is the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFS6lO6WaaM |

The Great Patrick Doyle has delivered many a classic film score.
I particularly liked his haunting theme for the magnificent 'Donnie Brasco' movie, heard for example during the opening titles. . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QtRCueFMeg Don't know whether this one has already figured above but the 'St Matthew Passion' by Bach from 'Casino' is beautiful. . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMva00IO0zA |

Some great suggestions on here guys. I think it would be a good idea to try and keep this thread to the top so we all have more time to listen to the suggestions from others by following the links. For me there is some great music linked on here which I haven't been aware of before.
Another favourite of mine is the music played in the closing sequence of Spielberg's film 'ET'. |

I was going to mention Hans Zimmer's theme from True Romance, which I already knew was basically a rip-off of Badlands. Turns out that, like the previously mentioned Lament for Limerick, it's a new arrangement of a few hundred years old song. In this case, Carl Orff rearranged Gassenhauer, from 1536(!), and Zimmer paid homage to his arrangement when working on True Romance. Either way, both beautiful.

Let's add: Ron Goodwin's theme for The Trap, now better known as used for something else: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-41pzjSM1Ac Elmer Bernstein's music for The Magnificent Seven: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XDB7GMnbUQ (Though that always sounds as though it was 'inspired' by a passage from Dvorak's New World Symphony) |
